Jewish Voice for Peace (and BDS) Can't Explain Why They Should Be Funded by the Jewish Community Federation
A local activist responds:
"This policy statement is a turning point-- not in its restatement of the existing values of the Federation, but in standing up against the creeping subversion of our community institutions by those who do not share and support those values. Jewish Voice for BDS is right about one thing, though--these guidelines are indeed aimed at them. After all, though they are a small fringe group, they have been vocally spitting in the face of this Jewish community's institutions for years. And the community, as embodied in its Federation, has finally said "Enough. We will not fund this agenda." No excommunication, no auto-da-fe, no fatwa, just a statement that those who wish to attack one of our central values shouldn't expect us to pay for it."
"The Federation is under no obligation to fund a group just because they happen to put the word "Jewish" in their name-- whether that's the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, Jewish Voice for Peace, or a "Messianic Jewish" congregation.
Organizations stand for a set of principles. The Federation's mission statement declares:
"The Federation gives continuity to Jewish values: [including]The supporting of Israel, the democratic homeland for the Jewish people". Why, then, should it support, even indirectly, organizations or programs whose mission or content runs counter to that? Doing so would actually violate the fiduciary responsibility that its board has to its donors. Since the founding principles of BDS include the fictitious "right" of return for descendants of refugees from the Arab war against the Jews in 1947-8, the BDS movement has clearly stated that its goal is not merely the end of Israel's occupation of the West Bank, nor the establishment of a Palestinian state living in peace next to a Jewish state of Israel; its goal is a Palestinian state in place of Israel. Cal SJP Leader Husam Zakharia Prefers Violence to Peace
Cal (UCB) = UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY
SJP = STUDENTS FOR JUSTICE IN PALESTINE
SJP LEADERSHIP = Husam Zakharia, leader of the Students for Justice in Palestine
-------
WHAT HAPPENED?
On Friday, March 5, 2010:
University of California at Berkeley was again the site of a clash involving pro-Israel and anti-Israel activists last Friday when Husam Zakharia, leader of the Students for Justice in Palestine, assaulted Jessica Felber of the pro-Israel Tikvah group with a shopping cart.
WHAT WAS THE RESULT?
Felber told Israel National News that she responded to the incident by immediately placing her attacker under citizens’ arrest. Police arrested him later that day and Felber expressed hope that the District Attorney will see the case through and file charges against Zakharia.
HAVE TIKVAH STUDENTS BEEN HARASSED BEFORE?
Felber said that Friday’s incident was not the first time Zakharia used violence against pro-Israel advocates. According to her, physical intimidation has frequently been employed as a tool by SJP to silence students opposing their anti-Zionist activities on campus. SJP students have been terrorizing us for three years with intimidation, accusations and threats. This incident is simply the culmination of it all and we are not going to tolerate it anymore.READ THE FULL STORY: Anti-Israel Activist Attacks Jewish Girl on Campus

Its Buycott Israel month!

From our Friends at Buycott Israel!
There seems to be no stopping the momentum BUYcott is gaining around the world. In addition to the new BuyIsraeliProductsNow campaign we told you about last week, a new project is starting this week: BUYcott Month (www.buycottmonth.com), a month-long campaign for buying from, investing in and celebrating the state of Israel.
BUYcott Month is a little offbeat, but promises to be a lot of fun. Supporters of Israel from around the world are being asked to send in photos of themselves or friends buying and enjoying Israeli products, taking part in Israel-related cultural events, "breaking" a boycott, or doing anything that celebrates Israel or fights anti-Israel activity during the month of March. As part of this campaign, these photos should include people giving what's called a "Finger-B" hand gesture to indicate their activity is part of the BUYcott Month project.
Are you buying Israeli products during Buycott Month? Having a couscous party? An Israeli wine tasting? An Ahava mud-wrestling match? We want your photos and your story. We’re ready to share pictures of you:
· Purchasing and enjoying Israeli products
· Talking with friends and colleagues about investing in hot Israeli companies
· Taking part in Israeli cultural events
· Counter-protesting at Boycott-Israel events
Or how about a dose of “Extreme Boycott” like sharing Israeli chocolates at the top of a mountain or at the bottom of the sea?
Don't forget- its your support that led to a 33% increase in Israeli exports in the last quarter of 2009. Lets kept the monentum going. Support democracy and buycott Israel!

And of course there will be the ubiquitous "direct actions" set up on campus to annoy the students- checkpoints and walls, and soldiers, oh my!
The best response to the lies and demonization came last year from Israel Vice Consul, Ishmael Khaldi, a Bedouin Arab.
So, I would like to share the following with organizers of Israel Apartheid week, for those of them who are open to dialogue and not blinded by a hateful ideology:
You are part of the problem, not part of the solution: If you are really idealistic and committed to a better world, stop with the false rhetoric. We need moderate people to come together in good faith to help find the path to relieve the human suffering on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Vilification and false labeling is a blind alley that is unjust and takes us nowhere.
You deny Israel the fundamental right of every society to defend itself: You condemn Israel for building a security barrier to protect its citizens from suicide bombers and for striking at buildings from which missiles are launched at its cities - but you never offer an alternative. Aren't you practicing yourself a deep form of racism by denying an entire society the right to defend itself?
Your criticism is willfully hypocritical: Do Israel's Arab citizens suffer from disadvantage? You better believe it. Do African Americans 10 minutes from the Berkeley campus suffer from disadvantage - you better believe it, too. So should we launch a Berkeley Apartheid Week, or should we seek real ways to better our societies and make opportunity more available.
You are betraying the moderate Muslims and Jews who are working to achieve peace: Your radicalism is undermining the forces for peace in Israel and in the Palestinian territories. We are working hard to move toward a peace agreement that recognizes the legitimate rights of both Israel and the Palestinian people, and you are tearing down by falsely vilifying one side.

Israel Exports Surge 33%. Is the BDS movement responsible?
Exports -- which account for nearly half of Israel's economic activity -- surged 33 percent in the fourth quarter while consumer spending rose 4.4 percent, according to the government's prior estimate of fourth-quarter data.
I can't help but wonder about the role the BDS movement has played in this. Did the BDS movement help fuel this growth by calling attention to the wide variety of Israeli consumer goods available in America?
Trader Joes Couscous was reported to "fly off the shelves" in some locations, as a direct result of the boycott publicity.
And in Toronto over 500 cases of Israeli wine were sold out in half an hour to the dismay of boycott organizer, who slunked away in embarrassment.
When we fight back, we win.
Support Democracy, buy Israeli.
And be sure to sign up for notifications of Buycott action here

Can we find 433,971 people to hate on Israel? California's Divestment Initiative
After 10 years of abject failure, the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions Movement, like the Energizer bunny, keeps going and going and going...
Chris Yatooma has recently introduced a ballot initiative to force California's state pension funds to divest from companies doing business in Israel. 433,971 signatures are needed by mid-July to put the proposed law on the November election ballot.
The initiative was submitted under the name of the "Israel Divestiture Forum," (IDF). According to an interview in the San Francisco Examiner , Yatooma claims "that's just me having some fun". No, Mr. Yatooma, it's fraud. The same way Paul Larudee of the International Solidarity Movement naming his latest anti-Israel venture the "Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees" ( AIPAC ) is fraud, meant to deliberately deceive. It’s the same tactics we've seen over and over again, as the anti-Israel forces attempt to push their agenda on a disinterested public. In the absence of facts and history, fraud and outright forgery have become the well-oiled tools in the anti-Israel tool chest.
According to Mr. Yatooma, "Public retirement systems in this state currently invest on behalf of the citizens of California in publicly traded foreign companies that may be at risk due to business ties with foreign states such as Israel." Clearly Mr. Yatooma has not read "Start up Nation" . Israel has more companies on the tech-oriented NASDAQ than any country outside the United States - more than all of Europe, Japan, Korea, India, and China combined. Israel also attracts more of the global pool of venture capital investments per capita than any other country, with $2 billion in foreign venture capital invested in 2008. For the last five years the Israeli economy has substantially outstripped the average GDP growth rate of developed countries. Today Israel has the highest density of startups in the world.
Yatooma's initiative is chock full of typos, misstatements and downright lies. His agenda is clear, however- by declaring "territory occupied by Israel since 1949" he denies the right of Israel to exist, within any borders.
Over the years the California initiative process has been hijacked by special interest groups pushing their agenda, and this year is no different. An initiative costs $200 to file, but can cost nearly $2 million to qualify for the ballot. The question is not whether Yatooma find 433,971 people to hate on Israel, but whether he can do it without resorting to fraud, forgery and lies. Given the history of the BDS movement, the odds aren't good.

END THE SIEGE! FREE GAZA ! A REPORT BACK ON THE GAZA FREEDOM MARCH WITH ALAN GOODMAN
Berkeley Fellowship Of Unitarian Universalists 1924 Cedar Street (At Bonita), Berkeley, CA Info: 510-684-8270
Alan Goodman, a participant in the Gaza Freedom March and a correspondent for Revolution newspaper, will give a report back on the Gaza Freedom March that took place on December 31, 2009 in Cairo. His slideshow-presentation illustrates and brings to life the critical situation for the people of Gaza one year after Israel's massacre. It highlights the importance of the Gaza Freedom March, in the struggle to break the siege of Gaza. This presentation paints a vivid picture of challenges in persevering with the mission of the March in Egypt after Egyptian authorities banned the marchers from going to Gaza - including a unique report on a major protest meeting of Egyptians to break the siege of Gaza......
End quote.
Now, if you are worried about the ethics of publishing material from their mailing list, don't be. The same notice also said "Forward this email far and wide, and mark your calendar. And we'll see you there! P.S. World Can't Wait will be tabling at all these programs, so if you can volunteer to help, we welcome your email or call!"
You may consider this post a 'far and wide forwarding'.
NOTE: Despite their best efforts, the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists cannot possibly equal the sheer hatemongering of their night with Gilad Atzmon last year on June 8.
It was a charity performance on behalf of the Free Gaza and International Solidarity Movements, co-sponsored by Bay Area Women in Black.
I remember it well.

It is worth remembering that the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists assert themselves as being equitable and openminded - in Berkeley that means an uncritical attitude towards bigotry, pro-terrorist ideologies, and hate.
Because, after all, those too are viewpoints.

Journalist Khaled Abu Toameh to speak at UC Berkeley
Tan Oak Room of MLK Building, UC Berkeley
UC Berkeley
Berkeley, California
Acclaimed Palestinian Journalist Abu Toameh will speak at UC Berkeley Wednesday. Khaled Abu Toameh ( خالد أبو طعمة, ) is an Israeli Arab journalist and documentary filmmaker. He is the West Bank and Gaza correspondent for the Jerusalem Post and U.S. News and World Report, and has been the Palestinian affairs producer for NBC News since 1988.
Khaled Abu Toameh was formerly a senior reporter for The Jerusalem Report, and a correspondent for Al-Fajr. He has produced several documentaries on the Palestinians for the BBC, Channel 4, Australian, Danish and Swedish TV.
Read his work here and here
Khaled Abu Toameh provides a a balanced, nuanced approach to reporting about the middle east. In his words:
During a recent visit to several university campuses in the U.S., I discovered that there is more sympathy for Hamas there than there is in Ramallah.
"Listening to some students and professors on these campuses, for a moment I thought I was sitting opposite a Hamas spokesman or a would-be-suicide bomber.
I was told, for instance, that Israel has no right to exist, that Israel’s “apartheid system” is worse than the one that existed in South Africa and that Operation Cast Lead was launched only because Hamas was beginning to show signs that it was interested in making peace and not because of the rockets that the Islamic movement was launching at Israeli communities.
I was also told that top Fatah operative Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life terms in prison for masterminding terror attacks against Israeli civilians, was thrown behind bars simply because he was trying to promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Furthermore, I was told that all the talk about financial corruption in the Palestinian Authority was “Zionist propaganda” and that Yasser Arafat had done wonderful things for his people, including the establishment of schools, hospitals and universities.
The good news is that these remarks were made only by a minority of people on the campuses who describe themselves as “pro-Palestinian,” although the overwhelming majority of them are not Palestinians or even Arabs or Muslims.
The bad news is that these groups of hard-line activists/thugs are trying to intimidate anyone who dares to say something that they don’t like to hear. "

Berkeley Daily Planet = Kaputz!
For years, Becky kept the rag alive with her own funds, determined to bash Jews at every opportunity. Rumor has it that the accountant embezzled enough funds to deter even this most vicious anti-semite from spending further pension proceeds on the rag.
So, the rag goes online. To be lost among the intarwebs, in a minefield of boredom.
The Daily Planet Watchdog had this to say:
Sad, Sad Day
The Daily Planet announced today that it is ceasing print operations, effective February 25. It will apparently continue on, at least for a while, as some kind of online echo chamber for Marxist and jihadi opinion, devoid of reportage.
We mourn its loss. A good local paper could have been a great civic asset. Regrettably, Daily Planet Executive Editor and Owner, Becky O’Malley, could never bring herself to represent the public good. Instead, she insisted on using her newspaper for the relentless dissemination of hatred and misinformation, enslaving it to her bitter prejudices and personal vendettas. In time, the paper’s advertisers fled, most decent citizens of Berkeley ceased reading it (except to monitor it for hate speech or to read its funnies), the paper’s print run shrank, and its news racks devolved into receptacles for fast food wrappers (see here), a habitat for vermin (see here). In a final orgy of self-pity, O’Malley threw a fundraiser for herself, but less than one-half of one per cent of her readers came to her party, resulting in little profit, if any at all. See here.
Defiant to the end, when recently castigated for publishing a paranoid conspiracy theory about the swine flu vaccine, she promised to desist from publishing further junk science lest it harm the public. But then when leaders in the community posed the question as to why she would desist from publishing junk science when she continues to publish junk history and junk theology that only serves to demonize Jews and Israelis (see here), her incredible response was to change her mind about junk science, and to state that she would then continue to publish nutty conspiracy theories (January 28, 2010). So great was this sorry woman’s hatred and bitterness.
We regret what could have been. However, we take heart that the Daily Planet’s ignoble demise, along with the financial ruin of its owners, Becky and Michael O’Malley, might serve as an object lesson to Berkeleyans for generations to come. In particular, future Berkeley newspapers (and politicians for that matter) may think two or three times over before they ever again so grossly insult the sensibilities of a large proportion of Berkeley’s population.
We do not know whether the Daily Planet’s online blog will warrant further efforts on our part. Nevertheless, we will keep DPWatchDog online into the indefinite future as a corrective to the availability of past issues of the Berkeley Daily Planet at the local library and online, for the use of future historians, and as a matter of personal pride, happy to have been able to help serve the public good.

Fight the BDS Movement--Shop at the Davis Co-op on Feb 14 and Show Israel Some Love!
Periodically, this effort targets stores selling Israeli products, in an effort to persuade them to stop stocking them. This time, they have focused their efforts on the Davis Co-op. The good news is that Co-op isn't buying the garbage being peddled by the anti-Israel groups.
So, go to the Davis Co-op and show Israel some love on Sunday, Feb. 14 for Valentine’s day.
1. Buy a whole bunch of Israeli products (if they are off the shelf, maybe someone else read this and bought the entire stock-- so go to the store manager and tell him/her they need to buy more!) Israeli wine, couscous and feta cheese are available at the Co-op.
2. Tell the store manager to keep stocking these products because you really like them!
3. Also tell the store manager that we’ve declared Feb. 14 as the "Day to Buy Israeli Products" so they can be prepared. And please pass the couscous.

A New Product to Boycott: Non-invasive lung cancer test developed in Israel.
"Using an array of sensors made of gold particles measuring just 5-nanometers wide (one nanometer is 1/100,000 the width of a human hair), researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have developed an "electronic nose" able to distinguish the breath of lung cancer patients from those without the disease. The research results, published online yesterday on the Website of Nature Nanotechnology, could lead to a rapid and non-invasive way of diagnosing and screening for lung cancer." In an initial trial, the “breathalyzer” test was able to detect lung cancer with 86 percent accuracy.
Also interesting about this project is that the research in Israel was led by Dr. Hossam Haick, an Arab Israeli and winner of many awards for his research, including the Chair for Leaders in Science and Technology (2006-2008), the Israel-France Award for Academic Excellence (2008), the Herschel Rich Innovation Award (2008), the Minerva Short-Term Research Award (2008), the Bergmann Award for Excellent Young Scientists (2007), the CREATE Award (2007), the Al-Qendil Prize (2007), and the YMCA (2007) and Rotary (2007) Honorary Decorations. In addition, Dr. Haick was selected for the lists of “50 Leading Israelis for 2007” and “four saluted Israeli scientists” of Yedioth Aharonot. Other honors and awards include the Fulbright fellowship, ‘Israel Ministry of Science and Technology' awards, Dr. Avrahami prize, and CNR-IMIP prize. Just what we'd expect from Israel, the apartheid state.
These findings have great potential for fast, easy, and cost-effective early diagnosis and screening of lung cancer. Be sure to look for this, and other fine Israeli innovations on the next Code Pink boycott list, because saving lives is never as important as advancing an ideology.

BERKELEY DAILY PLANET ADVERTISERS SUPPORTING JEW HATE
The distaste for Jews in Berkeley is reassuringly boring, bourgeois, and supportive of the status-quo.
Consequently, businesses that advertise in the Berkeley Daily Planet (published weekly) do so secure in the knowledge that their funding of Becky O'Malley's racist rag will in no way offend their customer-base. Purchasing ad-space in the Berkeley Daily Planet is a savvy business move and attracts precisely the clientele to which they wish to cater.
Ethical people will not want to patronize the following businesses:

Even a passing examination of the facts will make it obvious that the Berkeley Daily Planet and its readers aspire to an almost Faustian creepiness.
Berkeley, once a forward looking bastion of liberal values, has become a cramped and stunted parody of itself; a place where free-speech is permitted provided it is au-courant, hip, and above all politically approved, where dissent is applauded only if it is comfortingly orthodox.
The Berkeley Daily Planet caters to an audience that is hopelessly addicted to their own self-gratificatory fantasies.
In the past, similar publications would be sold under the counter.
Nowadays masturbatory material like the Berkeley Daily Planet is unabashedly sponsored by the venal salesmen of a passé bohemia.

Just in Time for Tu B'Shevat: Buy Israeli Clementines at Costco!
Clearly the post-Christmas deshelving of Ahava products was no more a political statement than the post-Pesach deshelving of Holyland matzah. Because now, Costco is selling Israeli Clemantines, tiny sweet juicy seedless tangerines- great for lunchboxes or as healthy snacks.
And yes, the usual parties are going crazy....
The haters helpfully suggest we call 425-313-8100 and speak with Mark DeCosta in produce. Please do, and thank him for carrying Israeli produce.

Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Gaza: Israel blamed
According to the Palestine Chronicle:
"Israel has opened the floodgates of one of its dams in the eastern part of the Gaza Strip, flooding Palestinian houses and causing severe damage.
The Israeli authorities opened the dam's floodgates without any prior warning or coordination with local authorities in Gaza, stunning the residents of the area, the Press TV correspondent in Gza reported late on Monday"
Strike you as odd, maybe? Dam? In the Desert? Huh?
Maybe the real story is found here, in the Palestinian paper Ma'an
A water reservoir in Baqa Ash-Sharqiya village overflowed and collapsed Wednesday, flooding the area north of Tulkarem and prompting Palestinian Civil Defense forces to declare the area around the flood a danger zone.
Heavy rainfall throughout Palestine caused floods in dozens of low-lying areas, with some municipalities reporting overflowing aquifers and several Gaza districts under evacuation orders as homes are covered in floodwater.
In a press statement, the Civil Defense forces said the reservoir was under watch on Tuesday night, and noted that it collapsed in the early hours of the morning, flooding the adjacent agricultural areas.
The area will be cordoned off until the rains subside.

Those "peace activists" never miss an opportunity to blame Israel. In addition to controlling finance, government and the media, apparently we control the weather.
Dang, we're good!

Israel Aids Haiti; Arab Nations Ignore The Disaster
The tragedy in Haiti is mind-boggling in its extent. Countries around the world are mobilizing to offer assistance. The Canadian Press just reviewed the list of those who are offering assistance: of course the wealthier developed countries such as the US and many EU countries as would be expected, but also India and China as well as regional countries such as Mexico and Venezuela. And, of course, Israel.
Israel, though there are almost no Jews in Haiti aside from tourists.
Israel, though Haiti routinely sides with the most one-sided anti-Israel resolutions at the UN.
Israel, though Haiti is far away from the Middle East.
This is not a new phenomenon. Israel sent aid after the devasting Asian tsunami in 2004 , after earthquakes in India and El Salvador in 2001 and Greece and Turkey in 1999. This isn't just Israelis contributing donations, but also mobilization of the Israel Defense Forces itself to provide direct assistance.
One might expect that the Arab states, many of them awash in oil revenue, would offer similar assistance. A Google search for "Arab earthquake aid Haiti" yields a few teasers on news sites that on further investigation are hits from unrelated stories on those sites, so the net result is pretty much what the Arab nations are providing: next to nothing. This should not surprise anyone, given their relatively miniscule contributions to UNRWA to assist the descendants of their fellow Arab refugees from the 1947-48 war-- a war which the Arab nations encouraged, supported, and bear responsibility for the resulting refugee population.
Several American organizations are raising funds which will be funneled through IsraAid, Israel's consortium of humanitarian aid groups. You can make contributions to IsraAid via B'nai B'rith International or via the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (select "Haiti Earthquake Relief" from the dropdown menu).
Haiti's government has more important things to worry about right now, but I can't help but wonder whether, when the next viciously anti-Israel resolution comes before the UN General Assembly, their representatives will remember that Israel (and the worldwide Jewish community) responded to their desperate situation with immediate and unconditional aid. And the Arab nations? Maybe they'll offer the Haitians discounted leases at the new Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai.

CATERPILLAR AND ISRAEL
QUOTE: "...we're asking supporters of the Stop Caterkiller campaign to each purchase one share of Caterpillar stock before the end of the year. While it may seem odd for a group pushing for divestment to encourage purchasing Caterpillar stock, there is a method to our madness. The real point of shareholder divestment is to pressure the corporation to divest of it's activities in the area of concern"
Katherine M Fuchs is the National Organizer of the 'US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation', in case you were wondering.
Like most of the organizations on the extremist fringe, there is substantial overlap with any number of other organizations. So much so that the number of angry groups seems to precisely equal the number of gibbering individuals. But I digress.
Fellow blogger Infectious Asian recently took pains to point out some crucial mathematical verities concerning this weird stock plot.
She wrote:
"Even if every man, woman, and child, in the country bought one share, Katherine Fuchs dear, and assuming, just assuming, that ALL of those shares were turned towards your dastardly goal, your side still would not have enough stock to sway Caterpillar."

"Heck, whatever stock you dummies buy won't even get you one percent. You guys are pretty st00.000.000.000pid! Please notice that there are as many little round circle characters in how I spelled that word as there are in 300 billion dollars."
Infectious Asian finishes her cheerful ribbing of Katherine Fuchs and her bedmates by calling them a bunch of moronic weasels.
I couldn't have put it better myself.

All of them, however, share one significant and thoroughly repulsive passion.

Becoming sexy for Palestine!
[Begin cite]
Dear Friends,
A group in California has come up with a creative way to raise money for If Americans Knew and a number of other organizations. It is not to late to join in their efforts! (Naturally, adjust step number 1 to fit your time and location.)
You are cordially invited to donate a pound or two of your flesh to Palestine by taking part in our Sponsored Diet in aid of various organizations including: **14 Friends of Palestine** **Keep Hope Alive** ** Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions** **If Americans Knew** **Jewish Voice for Peace** ** US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation**
The Rules
- Weigh in at a private home in San Rafael on Sunday Jan 3rd 2010
- Get sponsors (suggest $1 per pound, or more)
- Eat less or differently
- Exercise more, on your own, or join our weekly hikes
- Weigh-out Sunday March 21st, after 11 weeks
- Collect money from sponsors
- Give in all money to organizer by Saturday May 1st 2010
- Stop exercising and eat lots so we can do it all again next year?
Please note that while your actual weight will remain confidential, your weight loss (or gain!) will be broadcast for the merriment of others.
If you want to join, please email 14friendsofpalestine@gmail.com
Long distance dieters from elsewhere in America are welcome to join us.
Penalty clause: Anyone who gains weight pays a fine of $10 per pound (we could raise quite a lot of money this way)
Automatic disqualification for:
Rocks in pockets at weigh-in
Use of helium balloons at weigh-out
Limb amputation
Child birth
Good luck! And may we all end up with a figure of a twelfth grader.
Please note that while your actual weight will remain confidential, your weight loss (or gain!) will be broadcast for the merriment of others.
If you want to join, please email 14friendsofpalestine@gmail.com
Long distance dieters from elsewhere in America are welcome to join us.

COMMENT BY THE FORWARDER TO HIS OWN E-MAIL LIST: "This will show those Shylocks what a pound of flesh is really about! I urge all of you to join up now and loose weight, so that the masonic izzy plan to starve Gaza gets flummoxed. Forward this to everyone you know, ESPEcAilly anyone who lost their job because of the neocon economy! Stop sucking blood and gusts out of Palastine!" [CUT]
HATEFILLED STOMACHS
I actually do not know which I find more amusing - the idea of anti-Semites starving themselves and the attendant potential for medical problems, or the absurd off the wall addition by the gentleman who forwarded the e-mail from the fourteen haters of Israel.
There are times when I enjoy the conversational surrealism of the other side. Many of them are not soundly based in objective reality, quite a few live in strange parallel universes (such as Berkeley). Some are just nuts.
"...And may we all end up with a figure of a twelfth grader. "
There's a sexism in this wish that is actually quite appalling.
Seriously, I have to wonder how many Israel-haters have Humbert Humbert tendencies. Do they really wish that they looked like a high-school student again? Does the heart of a sexiliscious Lolita beat within the withered breasts of Marin County 'activists', or does some overwhelmed and overweight earth-mother deeply resent her present undesirability so much that she would starve herself in spite?
In addition to the suggestion of perversion, there is something deeply mediaeval about this self-imposed penance. Not only does it express a sense of white guilt, but it reflects an egomaniac attitude of centrality, in which the dieter believes his or her own mortification capable of altering the universe.
As well as a feeling of repulsiveness which may be alleviated by 'punishment'.
That latter is probably justified.

Jewish Voice for Peace and AFSC Formally Admit It-- They Are Opposed to the Existence of Israel

Originally posted here Thanks to drmike
At a pro-Hamas demonstration in San Francisco last week, Jewish Voice for Peace and the American Friends Service Committee finally dropped all pretense about their position on Israel. While both of these groups had been vigorously involved in anti-Israel activities for years (and joined together to co-present the now-notorious showing of "Rachel" last summer at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival), each had maintained the pretense that they didn't oppose the existence of a Jewish state per se. They have now decided to admit what we knew all along-- that they are fully and completely aligned with groups that openly call for the elimination of Israel, and that they share the agenda of groups such as al-Awda, International ANSWER, and, in the end, Hamas.
This flyer was handed out at the event; the sponsoring organizations listed include JVP and the Pacific Mountain Region of the American Friends Service Committee. The website of the Bay Area Campaign to End Israeli Apartheid not only endorses the Palestinian BDS movement (which calls for the elimination of Jewish statehood through the so-called "right" of return), but in case anyone misses the subtlety, it also states "We are opposed to imperialism, sectarianism, and Zionism."
Extremist groups such as al-Awda and ANSWER have at least been straightforward about their position-- opposition to any Jewish state while supporting terrorism as "legitimate resistance". JVP and AFSC have been trying for years to claim that they can stand with those groups in public and not pick up their foul stench. They have now given up that charade. JVP should simply complete the task and merge with the so-called "Jewish Anti-Zionist Network", since their positions are now indistinguishable. Perhaps their membership already is.

ZIONIST PLOT KEEPS BENJAMIN AND GALLOWAY OUT OF LIME LIGHT
This is both distressing and a cause for grave concern, according to the organizers, who demand to know why no one is paying any attention to them.
They have a theory.
The reason why that farce in Egypt ('the Gaza Freedom March') is not being reported ad-nauseum by the press is that 'the "counter-revolutionary forces" of Zionism and US Foreign Policy have given orders to the slave-media not to speak of it.'
This per several people associated with Medea Benjamin of CodePink and famous British explorer George Galloway, who are furious over this interference by the imperialist hegemonists.
And rightly so.
THE SIEGE OF GAZA AND CODEPINK
CodePink, as well as the other organizers of this (piffling and self-indulgent armchair revolutionary) event, are of the firm belief that Israel has no legal or moral right to defend itself, and that any attempt to control the materiel entering Gaza for Hamas' ongoing struggle against the Jews naturally qualifies as an intolerable imposition, a veritable offense against humanity, and an illegitimate Jewish conspiracy.
Such things must stop.
They (and they alone) will break the "siege" of Gaza.
They are not concerned with the thousands of rockets that Hamas fired onto Israeli civilians that preceded this "siege" - these attempts to harm Israelis were minor matters, fully justified in any case.
Nor are they disturbed by Hamas' iron control on popular expression, or the execution by Hamas soldiers of Christians, Fatah members, or members of other Muslim groups -subsequently shown to be the necessary, and for the common good!
The seizure for limited and internal re-distribution by Hamas of humanitarian supplies trucked in over the years is also no great matter. Like other governments in the Arab world Hamas was chosen by the people, for the people - and the people should above all accept that their choices once made cannot be undone.
[Exemplei gratia: Assad Père et Fils in Syria, the late S. Hussein, Sheikh Nasrallah in Lebanon, etcetera.]
This reflects the sober opinion of people associated with Medea Benjamin of CodePink, who are furious over any contradiction of the verities they hold sacred by the imperialist hegemonists.
And rightly so.
INTOLERABLE FURY
George Galloway and Medea Benjamin likewise are furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious. Furious.
Very very furious.
NOTE 1: Medea Benjamin (real name: Susan Benjamin - born September 10, 1952) is an American revolutionist who co-founded the anti-government group Code Pink ("CodePink").
She ran for the United States Senate in 2000 and lost. In 2009 she helped organize a march intended to traverse a few hundred yards of sand towards the Erez crossing. Fellow travelers include several people both notorious and formerly famous, as well as activists from movements perpetually at odds with United States foreign policy or intent on subverting democracy.
She is a fan of Hugo Chavez, a very manly man.
NOTE 2.George Galloway (real name: Saruman - born 16 August, 1954) is a relatively well-known Englishman who was expelled from the Labour Party in October 2003.
Currently he represents the most sub-literate electorate in Britain, that being a depressed area of London. Perpetually at odds with British foreign policy and intent on undermining the English system of government, George Galloway (Saruman) is an ally and firm friend of both Hezbollah and Hamas (which are recognized democratic movements).
INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE
Very well then.
Let this post serve to alert the world to CodePink's righteous agenda, which they share with people such as Dries van Agt, Dick Becker, Harry van Bommel, Alima Boumediene-Thiery, Jimmy Carter, Noam Chomsky, Gretta Duisenberg, Katherine M. Fuchs, Ronnie Kasrils, Cynthia McKinney, Anja Meulenbelt, Cindy Sheehan, Starhawk, Louie Vitale, Alice Walker, Roger Waters, and Ann Wright.
They fully support Hamas using the tunnels that run from Gaza into Egypt for stockpiling anti-aircraft missiles, longer-range rockets, heavy weapons, and explosives, instead of importing food and medicinal supplies. They wish Hamas to have a fully modern and up-to-date arsenal - and that is why they have taken it upon themselves to alleviate Hamas' burden by providing "civilian" aid and international support.
When this yields renewed Hamas attacks against Israel, they shall demand that Israel rely on the international community for a just solution to the problem, rather than (inevitably) deciding to defend itself militarily.
A balance of power between Zionist and Islamist forces, is, in their honest opinions, equitable, and it is time that the world guarantees that it should come to pass; give peace a chance.
This is all they ask. Surely the media should not censor their voice?
So, on their behalf, I request that AFP, AP, the ANP, the BBC, CNN, Fox, Pravda, Reuters, and other news organizations disseminate this peaceloving message, so that humanity may finally understand the motives of Dries van Agt, Dick Becker, Medea (Susan) Benjamin, Harry van Bommel, Alima Boumediene-Thiery, Jimmy Carter, Noam Chomsky, Gretta Duisenberg, Katherine M. Fuchs, George Galloway, Ronnie Kasrils, Cynthia McKinney, Anja Meulenbelt, Cindy Sheehan, Starhawk, Louie Vitale, Alice Walker, Roger Waters, and Ann Wright.
