Tammiphobia: Why is the harassment of Tammi Rossman-Benjamin allowed to continue on the UC campuses?

Winston Churchill’s words are of likely of little comfort to Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, a UC Santa Cruz lecturer and fearless advocate for the rights of Jewish students on campus. Her outspoken advocacy has won her acclaim throughout the Jewish community- she was on the short list of finalists in a nationwide Jewish Community Hero contest. Its also made her enemies.

From the Fousesquak blog:  In this open letter to Chancellor Blumenthal  Tammi Rossman-Benjamin describes the level of harassment and intimidation she has faced for daring to speak her mind   

She writes;

“In exercising my 1st amendment rights, a campaign of harassment, defamation and intimidation has been waged against me by CJP students. They certainly have the right to disagree with me, to ask for clarification, to voice dissent.  However their chosen response is deeply disturbing and alarming. Rather than disagree with me in a way that fosters understanding or asks for clarification, I am being harassed, intimidated and defamed in ways that are causing me to fear for my physical safety”       

The most current attack on Rossman-Benjamin stems from a talk she gave last summer, far away from the UC campuses.

Rossman-Benjamin writes:

....As you know, last summer I spoke out against campus anti-Semitism at a synagogue near Boston, in order to alert members of the local Jewish community to the problem of intimidation and harassment that some Jewish students face on college campuses today.  In my speech, I did not state, nor imply, that all Muslims or members of MSA and SJP are terrorists, or associate with terrorists. I spoke to raise awareness about a situation that exists in some instances on some campuses.  My intention was not to make a blanket statement or blanket accusations.  Yet my statements are being distorted by the Committee for Justice in Palestine to demonize me, I believe in retaliation for my speaking out against campus anti-Semitism in general, and initiating a Title VI complaint in particular.

 The pattern of harassment began with an email from UC Berkeley activist Tom Pessah , urging students to formally report this off campus talk to a UC campus climate survey on intolerance.

Benjamin singles these student activists out from all others, saying, “These are not your ordinary student groups like College Republicans or Young Democrats. These are students who come with a serious agenda, who have ties to terrorist organizations”.

A petition was started, along with a poster campaign.  The harassment culminated in a resolution at UC Berkeley condemning  Tammi Rossman-Benjamin.  Some speculated the cowardly move to introduce the resolution at Berkeley rather than her home campus of UC Santa Cruz  was made to eliminate potential opposition and to deliberately silence the voices of her supporters at Santa Cruz.

At no point has anyone addressed the actual content of  Rossman-Benjamin's statements, instead focusing their efforts on ad hominem attacks.

The historic ties of such groups as the Muslim brotherhood to the Muslim Students Association have been well documented   An article by Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah, Sam Roe and Laurie Cohen, from a 2004 Chicago Tribune documents the history of the Muslim brotherhood in America, including  the establishment of the  Muslim Students Association (MSA), incorporated in 1963, by members of the Muslim Brotherhood at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Over the years, at Berkeley and elsewhere there have been close ties between various extremist groups and the Students for Justice in Palestine.  There is appreciable cross-pollination between SJP and extremist anti-Israel groups, including Al Awda and the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). Over the course of years,  SJP has hosted members of  Al Awda and the International Solidarity Movement and has promoted, participated and co-sponsored their activities.

The relationship between the International Solidarity movement and SJP is not one-sided.  Local ISM members have been heavily promoting SJP's  Dam concert on their website as well.

The International Solidarity Movement is not a peace group. From the ADL's backgrounder

 Though ISM claims to promote only nonviolent means of resistance, it voices support for others who engage in armed resistance against Israel. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has even warned that its activity "at times" is "under the auspices of Palestinian terrorist organizations."

Paul Larudee  who recently advocated that "armed struggle must not be discouraged, but rather made as effective as possible" is the reputed head of the  Northern California International Solidarity Movement. Paul has been photographed with Hamas leaders in Gaza, and has been hosted multiple times on campus, sponsored by the SJP.

Paul Larudee  has worked closely with Deppen Webber, who once infamously tweeted "My New Years resolution is to destroy the Zionist state"

To Students for Justice in Palestine, to Tom Pessah , Rebecca Pierce and their friends:  Just as not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic, not all criticism of your group's tactics are "Islamophobic".  If you want to be taken seriously as a force for peace in the community, you will stop aiding and abetting extremists , stop hosting them, stop co-sponsoring events with them.  Tammi Rossman-Benjamin's words should have forced you to take a long sober look at those you've associated with over the years. Sadly, you were too distracted by your own self-righteous indignation and delusions of eternal victimization to even notice.

2 million protesters were announced- less than one half of 1 % of that even showed. Of the few demonstrations that were held, not a single one reached the Israeli capital.

2,500 announced. Final tally- total of 79 foreign activists landed in Israel.

With the One Democratic State Conference scheduled to take place in Munich June 30 – July 1 its too soon to tell, but given the track record of the Hate Israel cru, I'm guessing fail.

Our friend Jon writes about the delusional behavior of the anti-Israel cru here, explaining that this sort of activism is not so much about accomplishing a goal. Its more about feeling good about oneself. What else could explain the same tired failed tactics, repeated year after year?

"To understand this, we need to go back to my favorite political writer Lee Harris whose work on fantasy politics is still required reading for anyone trying to understand 9/11 and its aftermath. His essay on fantasy ideology that put him on the map began with this personal anecdote:

"My first encounter with this particular kind of fantasy occurred when I was in college in the late sixties. A friend of mine and I got into a heated argument. Although we were both opposed to the Vietnam War, we discovered that we differed considerably on what counted as permissible forms of anti-war protest. To me the point of such protest was simple — to turn people against the war. Hence anything that was counterproductive to this purpose was politically irresponsible and should be severely censured. My friend thought otherwise; in fact, he was planning to join what by all accounts was to be a massively disruptive demonstration in Washington, and which in fact became one.

My friend did not disagree with me as to the likely counterproductive effects of such a demonstration. Instead, he argued that this simply did not matter. His answer was that even if it was counterproductive, even if it turned people against war protesters, indeed even if it made them more likely to support the continuation of the war, he would still participate in the demonstration and he would do so for one simple reason — because it was, in his words, good for his soul.

What I saw as a political act was not, for my friend, any such thing. It was not aimed at altering the minds of other people or persuading them to act differently. Its whole point was what it did for him.

And what it did for him was to provide him with a fantasy — a fantasy, namely, of taking part in the revolutionary struggle of the oppressed against their oppressors. By participating in a violent anti-war demonstration, he was in no sense aiming at coercing conformity with his view — for that would still have been a political objective. Instead, he took his part in order to confirm his ideological fantasy of marching on the right side of history, of feeling himself among the elect few who stood with the angels of historical inevitability."

To Deppen and friends- all I can wish for you is more of the same kind of "success" you've grown accustomed to. And to the Jewish community, and to all friends of Israel - may you continue going from strength to strength

For Paul, Deppen and Feroze: A Little History. The Liberation of Jerusalem

This one's for you, Deppen Webber. And for Paul Larudee, and Feroze Mithiborwala. Its also for all the other terribly misguided participants in the failed Global March to Jerusalem. You know who you are.

Jerusalem Day will be celebrated this year, 2012 on the eve of May 19. This holiday commemorates the 1967 liberation and reunification of Jerusalem, the sacred capital city of the Jewish people.

The day is marked by solemn government ceremonies, memorial services for soldiers who died in the battle for Jerusalem, parades as well as prayers. No Deppen- its not that we are trying to "Judaize " our eternal capital and the heart of Jewish life. That’s been accomplished long ago, by 3000+ years of love, and longing and sacrifice.

Read please the transcript of events leading up to this moment of liberation. Read the order "Protect every building, in every way. Do not touch anything, especially in the holy places"- realize that then as now, even under fire, the ethics of the Israeli army shined through. Read about the soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force- unbelievably tough men- largely secular, sobbing at the sight of our Kotel- the last remnant of Solomon's temple. How can you read this, Paul. Deppen. Feroze, and still deny the cultural, religious and emotional ties of the Jewish people towards Jerusalem?

Did a Global March to Jerusalem Organizer Solicit violence against Local Peace Activists?

Truth, its been said is stranger than fiction.

Our story so far.
Gilad Atzmon is known as much for his virulent anti-Semitism as his music. He was scheduled to appear in Oakland this evening at 7:30. Human rights activists led by our friends at San Francisco Voice for Israel organized a vigil to show that Oakland and the entire Bay Area stand united against hate speech.

Alarmed by the presence of an anti-hate vigil at his pro-hate event, local anti-Israel activist Deppen Webber solicited "security" volunteers on Twitter from the Occupy Oakland anarchists. Then the threats began.

Deppen Webber. Member of "Jewish" Voice for "Peace". Member of the International Solidarity Movement. Organizer of the Global March to Jerusalem. Was Deppen Webber soliciting thugs to harass, intimidate and attack peaceful protesters? Just something to think about the next time the ISM tells you that they believe in "non-violent" resistance.

The story continues. Apaprently there is a strong rumor floating around that Gilad Atzmon fundraiser was cancelled. They'll blame the "zionists"- they always do. But we know- the real reason was that almost no advance tickets were sold for this event.

UPDATE

No, the event was not cancelled. The event was ultimately held at the Islamic Cultural Center, on Madison Ave in Oakland.
As people approached the Arts center, they were handed a flyer that read:

On Feb 6 we reserved Annex A100 for Feb 25 event featuring anti-etc..... (insert boilerplate anti-Israel propaganda here)
On Tuesday Feb 22 the Anti-Defamation League" [ADL] issued a press release denouncing Gilad Atzmon and our scheduled and advertised program at MCCA. the ADL is notorious for their spying operations against North American activists who fought apartheid in South Africa and Israel. In 2003 a public acknowledgement of their spying operation was front page news in the SF Chronicle as they lost a civil liability case.
Yet ADL and the 1% have clout.
One day after the ADL press release denouncing our program and identifying MCCA there was suddenly a "problem" with our room reservation at MCCA. 48 hrs before our event we were informed that we would have to reschedule because we did not have the proper "permit". Contacts with senior management overseeing MCCA took place the next day Friday Feb 24 but resulted in no reversal of this outrageous censorship. A series of lame falsehoods was offered by MCCA management. Obviously they cannot say the real reason for the abrupt and sudden finding of a problem.
We do not know if it was through bribery or threats but one way or another ADL and its supporters corrupts the integrity of Oakland Parks and Recreation which manages the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts. The 1% has again demonstrated its influence and insidous power.
Shame on you, MCCA and Oakland Parks and Recreation management....."

The Gilad Atzmon dog and pony show at the Islamic Cultural center of Oakland began 40minutes late, and was attended by approximately 2 dozen people.

Global March to Jerusalem. Is the Red/Green Alliance Imploding?

Paul Larudee and Deppen Webber are the local organizers of the Global march to Jerusalem. Noura Khouri, embedded in Egypt is also hard at work on the project, which seeks to storm the borders of Israel on March 30.

But the hapless Paul and Deppen have seemed despondent of late. (Have both of them been banned from Israel for 10 years? Whatever could they have done to deserve that?)After all, a 21st century crusade is such brilliant idea, but, according to Paul, they are having trouble finding organizations to endorse this action. Not even the Israel is always wrong folk at JVP want to touch this action with a ten foot pole.

Why, they ask? After all, this assault on the legitimacy and sovereignty of the Jewish homeland had been planned for over a year. Deppen and Paul have spent long hours traveling the capitals of Europe and the Middle east organizing this.

Despite a recent influx of major endorsements, however, many still refuse or ignore the invitation.

Why?

We hear some of the same arguments: that the project is too risky and confrontational. However, it is also true that the project was not the brainchild of any of these solidarity groups, or even of their Palestinian allies. Instead, it came from groups that represent large numbers of Palestinians – including many from the Palestinian expatriate communities in the border countries, such as the refugee camps, the Islamic movements and the supporters of armed resistance groups. Paul seems genuinely surprised that American organizations are loathe to associate themselves with organizations that support and endorse terror.

Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo "Tel Aviv, judgment day has come"

5,000 people joined a Muslim Brotherhood rally in Cairo on Friday called to promote the "battle against Jerusalem's Judaization." Activists vowing to "one day kill all Jews" attended the rally, held in Cairo's most prominent mosque.

Speakers were quick to scapegoat and condemn Israel with calls for Jihad and for liberation the whole of Palestine. Ahmed al-Tayeb claimed that Jews everywhere in the world are seeking to prevent Islamic and Egyptian unity. "In order to build Egypt, we must be one. Politics is insufficient. Faith in Allah is the basis for everything," he said. "The al-Aqsa Mosque is currently under an offensive by the Jews… we shall not allow the Zionists to Judaize al-Quds (Jerusalem.)

Upon leaving the rally, participants were given flags, with Egypt's flag on one side and the Palestinian flag on the other, as well as maps of Jerusalem's Old City detailing where "Zionists are aiming to change Jerusalem's Muslim character."

Today begins a preliminary "March to Jerusalem", a precursor to the much larger march to be held in 2012. The March 30 crusade, organized by Paul Larudee, Deppen Webber, Feroze Mithiborwala and others aims to amass thousands on all Israel's borders.

Kiss my BDS. Standard and Poors, a United States-based financial services company is a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies . This venerable company publishes financial research and analysis on stocks and bonds and countries reflecting their opinion on the general creditworthiness of an obligor with respect to a particular debt security and financial obligation. Over the years credit ratings have achieved wide investor acceptance for helping to determine the security of investments. Standard and Poors just raised Israel's credit rating to an A+ marking the first time Israel’s S&P credit rating has been at A+. It had been at A since November 2007.

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz called the increased credit rating “a badge of honor” and said it was a reward for the economic policies adopted during the global financial crisis.

“This achievement is particularly remarkable given the debt and employment crises that have hit the credit ratings of many other countries,” he said.

In the ten years since its inception, the BDS movement has failed to make any gains towards undermining Israel's economy. As a result, the panicked BDS cru are currently resorting to even more underhanded means to destroy Israel's economy.

This charming display is apparently one shot out of hundreds of tweets sent out by Free Palestine Movement Activist Deppen Webber to financial services providers, banks, and financial advisory firms in an effort to get them to "short sell" Bed Bath and Beyond stock. (Bed Bath & Beyond is the current object of the BDS'ers wrath, because they dare sell an israeli product, Sodastream. ) Deppen's "teaching moment" been posted on several anti-Israel sites , presumably in an effort to get others to follow suit. On at least one of the sites, a spirited discussion ensues on the legality of trying to manipulate stock prices.
