Berkeley's mayor Jesse Arreguin opposed to appointment of Hatem Bazian to Local Commission

Berkeley's mayor Jesse Arreguin has publicly expressed his opposition to the appointment of Hatem Bazian to the city's Peace and Justice Commission, and has expressed his frustration about his inability to prevent it.

From the J Weekly, the Jewish News of Northern California:
Berkeley mayor objects to appointment of Bazian to city commission

Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin is not pleased with the appointment of controversial UC Berkeley lecturer Hatem Bazian to the city’s Peace and Justice Commission, saying Bazian is not qualified to serve as a public official because of his “anti-Semitic statements and actions.”

Bazian, a lecturer at UC Berkeley and the co-founder of American Muslims for Palestine  has called for an intifada in America, and has spread anti-semitic images and messaging through social media

Mayor Arreguin, speaking to the J Weekly:

“There’s documentation showing things he has said that are very offensive and inappropriate and anti-Semitic.  And on that basis, I think it’s a very serious issue about whether this person should be in public office.”

Cheryl Davila, the Berkeley City Council representative from District 2 had also appointed Bazian as an emergency stand-in, in a move that prompted 3 Berkeley Rabbis to write to mayor Arreguin, expressing their deep concerns.   Davila's continued promotion of Bazian, a financial contributor to her campaign, shows her  abject disdain for the local Jewish community

Cheryl Davila is a regular at local and national anti-Israel events, and received financial support for her campaign from anti-Israel activists nationwide.

Hatem Bazian: The extremist member of Berkeley's Peace and Justice Commission

Its often quipped  "Two Jews, three opinions".   Not when it comes to Hatem Bazian, a man so extreme that the three leading congregational Rabbis in Berkeley, representing the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox movement co-signed a letter in opposition to his appointment  as an emergency stand-in for Berkeley Councilperson Cheryl Davila.  The latter stated, in part:

“Prof. Bazian has a history of encouraging and personally engaging in speech which is offensive, uncivil and encourages demonization of others, including many citizens of Berkeley”

In spite of the controversy and concern over Bazian's divisive and inflammatory rhetoric Davila has now appointed him to the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission.   Bazian, who once infamously called for an intifada in America is now on a commission tasked with advising the City Council and the School Board  "on issues of peace and social justice."

Cheryl Davila is a regular participant in anti-Israel protests on campus, in the streets, and in front of the local Israeli consulate.

Hatem Bazian and anti-Israel activists across the nation donated to Davila's election campaign.

Zaytuna College congratulated Bazian on his appointment.

The local Jewish community is understandably concerned about having a man who recently retweeted anti-Semitic caricatures tasked with advising the city on matters of social justice.

Berkeley City Councilperson Cheryl Davila nominates Hatem Bazian to be her Emergency Stand-in

In a discussion on helping children get through disasters, Fred Rogers related this story. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

The Berkeley City Council is currently in the process of nominating 'helpers"- emergency stand-ins  for the Council, in the event of catastrophe.  Berkeley City Council representative from District 2, Cheryl Davila has nominated  Hatem Bazian, a contributor to her election campaign, for this role.

Hatem Bazian's history of inflammatory, divisive rhetoric make him completely unsuited for this position.

Listen to Hatem Bazian 's own words. Hatem Bazian has called for an intifada- a violent uprising- in America. He attempted (and failed) to organize a blockade of the Israeli consulate in San Francisco.

He has promoted violence.  "The only language the slave master understands is the language of violence". He has promoted harassment of our elected officials "We need to translate our strength into the harassment of the political leadership." He has used social media to spread anti-Semitic memes.

Could Cheryl Davila have picked a person less likely to unify a community shattered by disaster?

CALL TO ACTION:

Tomorrow (July 24th, 2018) the Berkeley City Council will vote on whether or not to appoint anti-Semitic UC Berkeley Professor Hatem Bazian as a "Standby Officer" to replace one of the Councilors in case of emergency.

Sara Kershnar: Berkeley City Councilperson Cheryl Davila's reprehensible assistant

Controversial Berkeley City Council woman Cheryl Davila has hired Sara Kershnar as her legislative assistant.  If Cheryl had done any vetting or research, she might have learned that Sara had been previously arrested for disrupting a program at the San Francisco Jewish Community Center.

Haneen Zoabi comes to town.

In a perfect world, Israeli MK Haneen Zoabi would be held up as an example of Israel's pluralistic and  democratic nature.  An Arab woman, educated in Israeli universities and elected to the Kenneset is surely a testimony to Israel's vibrant pluralism and vigorous democracy.

We don't live in a perfect world.

Instead, Zoabi  is crisscrossing the Bay area, spreading lies about the state she calls home, enabled by some of the most extremist groups in the Bay area.

A variety of vehemently anti-Israel groups have been sponsoring and promoting Zoabi's Bay area tour.   "Jewish" Voice for Peace is a sponsor and has freely promoted this open supporter of Hamas.

Zoabi has appeared at the Ramallah Institute, at Stanford, at  Berkeley City hall (invited by the equally extreme Cheryl Davila), at UC Berkeley and on KPFA, a local radio station.

Sue Fishkoff of the J weekly interviewed Zoabi.

“I’m willing to meet with and talk with anyone,” she said. But they’d better know what they’re going to hear from her, she added. “Anyone who is not anti-Zionist, who perceives himself as a left-wing Zionist, must recognize their complicity in the tragedy of the Palestinians. You are either anti-Zionist and realize the colonialist dimension of Israel as a Jewish state, or you have to take responsibility for the oppression of the Palestinians.”
The “progressive Zionist left” is misguided at best, she said. The point is not to make things better for the Palestinians, she said, but to dissolve the state itself and replace it either with two states — one secular, one Palestinian — or, ideally, one binational secular state with self-determination for both Jews and Palestinians.
She has been criticized in recent years for stating that Jews are not a people, and therefore do not need a state, in contrast to Palestinians. Reiterating that view to J., she said Jews outside Israel have no claim on that land and never did. ..."

Zoabi's Bay Area visit would have gone unchallenged, if not for the brave students of UC Berkeley, who conducted a brief, dignified silent protest  last night.  Wearing shirts that declared  "I am a Zionist" in Arabic, they held signs that exposed Zoabi's racist agenda in front of the auditorium, visibly flustering Hatem Bazian, the host of the evening.

Afterward they released this open letter to the Cal Chancellor, documenting Zoabi's lies, and the
University structure that gave her a platform.

From Tikvah, the Zionist voice on campus:

We will not be silent as our identities are slandered through an official, academic platform supported by the university, which provides lecturers like Hatem Bazian the opportunity to do this over, and over and over again....We now call on ChancellorChristand the UC Berkeley Administration to take a definitive stance against anti-Semitism and to take immediate administrative action against Hatem Bazian for promoting said anti-Semitism and hosting a radical, offensive  and utterly dishonest speaker in an "academic event".  If no action is taken immediately, we will have proof  that our university does not care about academic , intellectual and moral dishonesty, and that it chooses to bury and forget the threats Jewish and Israeli students face on this campus.

We hope the Chancellor takes the right steps and finally acknowledges the deep rooted level and acceptance of anti-Semitism at UC Berkeley, and its never ending promotion by the same faculty member.  We will not back down and will continue to vocally oppose the indoctrination happening under the guise of academia, today and every day.

Cheryl Davila's BDS litmus test for Berkeley

Through the wonder of Berkeley's "ranked choice" voting Cheryl Davila found herself on the Berkeley city council.   In the November 2016 election, incumbent Darryl Moore received just under 40% of the 8,000 votes cast in the first round of the ranked-choice ballot. Nanci Armstrong-Temple and Cheryl Davila split the remaining votes 29% and 31%.

The second round of ranked-choice voters gave Moore an additional 446 votes and Davila 1,236 votes, giving Davila a narrow victory margin of just 168 votes.
Davila's claim to fame in Berkeley previously had been her hijacking the agenda of the Berkeley Human Welfare Commission for months, in an effort to pass a divestment from Israel proposal.
In her quest for election to the city council, the Davila campaign called upon their old friends at UC Berkeley's Students for Justice in Palestine, visiting them, and posting on their Facebook page.

Cheryl has remained active in the anti-Israel camp, appearing at rallies on campus and in front of the local Israeli consulate.  She has apparently been attempting to pay back her campaign debts.

Berkeley City Councilperson Cheryl Davila promotes extremist views
Ben Gerhardstein, a former city transportation commissioner believes Cheryl Davila booted him off the Commission in part because he declined to state his opinion regarding divestment from Israel.
From Berkeleyside:

“You indicated that a non-transportation issue was important to you in selecting a Transportation Commissioner,” Gerhardstein wrote to Davila on Nov. 27 after she informed him by email that he had been removed from the commission. “During our first meeting, you noted that as a Human Welfare and Community Action Commissioner you authored a recommendation to Council to divest from companies benefiting from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, which raised your profile. You said that the issue was important to you and you asked whether I was pro-Palestinian (and supported divestment) or a Zionist. You noted that you were asking all potential District 2 commissioners this question and suggested that you were only interested in appointing divestment supporters to commissions...”
At least two other commissioners serving at the behest of Davila told Berkeleyside the question of Israel and divestment came up during their interviews with Davila....

By dragging her BDS litmus test into the realm of local politics, Davila has again shown her willingness to abandon the very real needs of the people of Berkeley.  Imagine if a Jewish candidate did what Davila has done.  Imagine the calls of "dual loyalty".

Read it all at Berkeleyside.

UPDATE: From Dan Pine, writing in the J of Northern California

According to the City of Berkeley’s published record of campaign contributions, her campaign drew financial support from local anti-Israel activists U.C. Berkeley lecturer and SJP founder Hatem Bazian (currently under fire for anti-Semitic tweets from earlier this year), Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Children’s Alliance, and Donald Wagner from Friends of Sabeel.\

Anti-Israel Activist Cheryl Davila wins a seat on the Berkeley City council

Don't ever think your vote doesn't count.

Thanks to the algorithms of ranked choice voting, Cheryl Davila has won a seat on the Berkeley City Council by 34 votes.

Cheryl's been a regular at local anti-Israel functions in the Bay area.

She recruits her campaign volunteers directly from UC Berkeley Students for Justice in Palestine

Her contributors read like a who's who of anti-Israel activists. Hatem Bazian. Hassan and Margaret Fouda. JVP's Andrew Gutierrez,  Cindy Shamban and Glen Hauer. Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Children's Alliance. Donald Wagner from Fiends of Sabeel.  The entire Ezzeddine family.  The Zayour family. Anti-Israel activists from as far away as Texas and New York have contributed to her campaign.

Cheryl Davila knows this support didn't come cheap.Faced with the sky-rocketing cost of housing, homelessness, and parking shortages, the last thing Berkeley should need to worry about is establishing its own foreign policy.  Nevertheless, expect her to introduce a Berkeley Divestment from Israel resolution into the City Council next year.

UPDATE:

As of November 14 the votes have not yet been certified, but Davila remains in the lead.

*****

This will be the second year Cheryl Davila is speaking at this event. Cheryl gained notoriety for hijacking the agenda of the Berkeley Human Welfare Commission for nearly a full year to push a divestment initiative, neglecting the poor of Berkeley in the process. Cheryl is now running for Berkeley City council from District 2, and has been looking towards SJP for some quid pro quo.

The people of Berkeley should know better to elect a councilperson beholden to such extremist special interests.

Pro-Israel groups are mobilizing as well, to counter the demonization and inflammatory rhetoric of the group that is commonly dubbed "Students for Just us in Palestine".

This should be interesting.

The Vampire's Kiss: Berkeley Style.

Via Emunah:

From the Jerusalem Post, written by our friends at Divest This.

Legend (or at least Bram Stoker) posits that a vampire can only enter someone's home if he or she is invited across the threshold.

There could be no metaphor more apt for the divest-from-Israel campaigns that have proliferated among schools, unions, cities and churches in the US and Europe over the last four years.

Either small, unrepresentative groups of activists invite BDS into their organization, or outside activists join only in order to infiltrate it. The key to the strategy, as he and others have pointed out, is the “halo effect,” which allows puny groups of extremists to “punch above their political weight.” The strident clamors of a fringe group, which would otherwise go unnoticed, acquire gravitas and urgency when issued under the auspices of a respected organization. By the time the majority of the membership wakes up and sees the carnage, it is too late. The organization is left wounded and debilitated, and the vampire moves on to its next victim.

We recently witnessed this phenomenon in Berkeley.  Over the course of a year, anti-Israel activists have lobbied, virtually unchallenged,  a Commission  mandated with administering federal block grants to alleviate poverty to adopt a divestment resolution targeting Israel.

Originally appearing on the Human Welfare Commission’s agenda on September 17, 2014, the divestment resolution introduced by Cheryl Davila has reared its ugly head on nearly every Commission agenda since then.  The divestment resolution appears on the Human Welfare Commission agenda on November 11, 2014. January 28, 2015. February 9, 2015. February 28, 2015. April 15, 2015. May 20, 2015. June 17, 2015. September 16, 2015. October 21, 2015.

Its rather a remarkable achievement  for a group that still insists its voice has been "silenced'

In spite of the wording which co-opts the language of the civil rights movement, this divestment resolution and the whole tactic of BDS is not about peace with Israel. Its about peace- without Israel.   Cheryl Davila is no innocent. She knows the truth. She stood with her BDS colleagues at the Oct 14 “Day of action”  at UC Berkeley while SJP chanted  “From the river to the sea”  and “We support the Intifada”. And again, on October 15, she stood with them in front of the Israeli consulate on Montgomery Street when they chanted “We don’t want one state. We want 48"  She attended the Atlanta Conference of the US Campaign when an award was given to Rasmea Odeh- a convicted terrorist responsible for the death of 2 young Israelis.

Cheryl’s willingness to neglect the Human Welfare Commission’s core responsibility in pushing this resolution ultimately led to her dismissal from the commission.

During the public comment period before the Commission's October 21 vote, 54 spoke against the resolution, and 36 spoke in favor. The resolution failed to pass.

But like Bram Stoker’s vampire, (or Monty Python’s parrot) BDS in Berkeley may not be quite dead, yet. Commission Chair Praveen Sood  is pushing his own BDS-lite resolution. And local anti-Israel activists are attempting to groom Cheryl Davila to seek an elected office.

This time Berkeley is mobilized to fight back.  Tired of having community institutions hijacked, a local attorney has written to the city, urging them not to continue squandering public funds and community resources.

Again from Divest this!

Divest-from-Israel campaigns are kind of like Count Dracula: no matter how many times a stake is driven through their heart, they keep trying to get up (albeit always a bit more decrepit and overwrought than the time before).

The Palestine Exception

Via Emunah:

Three dozen student and community members gathered in Boalt Hall  on October 5  to hear a panel presentation on the launch of a new campaign, Palestine Exception. The name is aptly chosen. Particularly on campus, Palestinians and their supporters have come to regard themselves as exceptional, and above the rules.

Speaking were Liz Jackson of the Palestine Legal Solidarity, a branch of the Center for Constitutional research (CCR) that offers free legal advice and representation only to Palestinian activists.  In spite of a repressive climate on campuses for students nationwide, the only ones are covered under the largess of this organization are Palestinian activists. That’s the Palestine Exception.

Cheryl Davila, the Berkeley Human Welfare Commissioner fired from her post for bypassing the poor of Berkeley in favor of the Palestinians exhorted the room to attend  a city of Berkeley Oct 21 divestment vote, and to sign the anti-Israel petition. When it comes to Palestine, you don’t even need to be a Berkeley resident to weigh in on how Berkeley spends its time and money. That’s the Palestine Exception.

Lara Kiswani of the Arab resource and Organizing Center was vocal in her support of convicted terrorist and Jew-killer Rasmea Odeh, who lied on her US immigration papers and faces deportation. Filing out government documents truthfully is apparently optional for Palestinian community activists.  That’s the Palestine Exception.

Lee Garagliano of the IJAN gave a baffling presentation which concluded that many Jewish philanthropists donated heavily to Jewish and pro-Israel causes, and that this is part of a broad and vast conspiracy targeting Palestinian activists and Muslims.  Think everything always revolves around you? That’s the Palestine Exception

Kumars Salehi, a UC Berkeley Graduate student  described disciplinary proceeding against SJP after his group “violated a tiny rule”.  Yes, THIS Kumars Salehi.  Tweeting from the Berkeley SJP account he boasted of his role in covering up posted material placed by other student groups. Now he complains about his voice being silenced.

SJP and its allies believe that long established campus protocols don’t apply to them. That’s the real Palestine Exception.

Berkeley City Councilman Darryl Moore ditches Davila

Via Emunah:

The Human Welfare and Community Action Commission of Berkeley, charged with dealing with  the issues of poverty in Berkeley is under fire for bypassing their central mission and instead focusing on the Israel/Palestinian issue.

Berkeley City Councilman Darryl Moore, appalled at the misuse of the commission,  terminated his appointee after she refused to withdraw the matter.  Cheryl Davila had been a commissioner since 2009.

Anti-Israel groups packed the South Berkeley Senior Center last Wednesday evening to urge the commission to pass a divestment from Israel resolution. Three supporters of Israel also addressed the council.

The events in Berkeley highlight the narcissism at the core of the BDS movement, and the hypocritical willingness of anti-Israel activists to sacrifice anything to achieve their goals- including those they purport to represent.

Hundreds of Palestinians lost their jobs because of the BDS vendetta against Sodastream. On Wednesday night, the same phenomenon was on display. Berkeley’s poor were simply collateral damage as JVP and AROC pushed to have the resolution passed.

The long discredited Berkeley Daily Planet has picked up the cause, printing verbatim a press release by  local anti-Israel activists. In a desperate attempt to tie the resolution into her Commission’s mandate, Cheryl Davila is quoted as saying the war in Gaza  caused a “ severe social welfare crisis, particularly for children, women, and the elderly in Gaza.”

Commissioners voted to revise the resolution, in an attempt to get other Berkeley Commissions to endorse it. Voting will likely take place at the Human Welfare and Community Action Commission October 21st meeting.

What can you do?

Drop the Human Welfare and Community Action Commissioners an email, urging them to avoid distracting, divisive foreign policy proclamations, and to focus on the very real problems of Berkeley.
