Canary Mission. Is it helping?

From Emunah:

In the Bay area, we’ve experienced firsthand the smug hypocrisy of the hard left and witnessed the indignities they've committed in the name of “justice". They’ve repeatedly blurred the lines between private and public. More than once we’ve seen groups like Code Pink take their protests to their opponents homes.   Family and neighbors of their target are dismissed as collateral damages.  From the protests at Berkeley Professor John Yoo’s home, to the aborted invasion of the home of the Israeli general consul, being a self-righteous activist means never having to say you’re sorry.

When has justice has ever been achieved using unjust means?

On many occasions we’ve experienced the shrill expression of their “right to free speech”, over the rights of others.  Synagogue and Jewish community events have been disrupted, virtually without consequence.

Canary Mission is a consequence.

No, we don’t know who is behind it, and no, its not us. (and you can stop asking, now)  But after watching our activists threatened and attacked, and seeing our institutions defiled and vandalized by the same handful of extremists,  its clear there needs to be a consequence. The  “catch and release” policies of municipal law enforcement have been useless up to now. The organized Jewish community lacks an effective strategy.

There's a thoughtful discussion taking place at Divest this  (the lawful good branch of the Worldwide Zionist Conspiracy) about the efficacy of the Canary Mission "naming and shaming" tactic, examining it from both an ethical and a practical perspective.

I find myself dissenting.  Canary Mission functions as a distiller of information, profiling anti-Israel activists' own words, gathered from youtube, social media and the mainstream press. It fills a need.

Kinneret Israel
Several years ago, an anti-Israel activist and Al-Awda volunteer , Kinneret Israel bluffed her way into a job at several local Hebrew High schools, and proceeded to hijack a curriculum on Jewish identity with her special brand of Israel-hate.  Baffled (and bored) students complained to their parents. Parents complained to the schools. Kinneret was eventually  "let go". Predictably, there was nothing on her resume regarding her anti-Israel activism when she applied for the position.

If a quick google search of her name had brought up her history of anti-Israel agitation, Kinneret's malignant disregard for community values would have been obvious, and she simply never would have been hired.

If Canary Mission continues to meticulously and cautiously source and document their work, they can become a valued asset to the community.

Remembering the words of the great Albus Dumbledore:

“The truth." Dumbledore sighed. "It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution.”

We are Not Canary Mission.

The team operating the website Canary Mission is compiling information on anti-Israel activists, and presenting them in an accessible easy to use website.

From their mission statement:

Canary Mission is run by students and concerned citizens galvanized and motivated by our mission to protect the universal values of freedom and democracy. We pursue our mission by presenting the actions of hate-fomenting individuals and organizations - clearing up the ambiguity that surrounds their activities on campus and beyond. Our hope is that by shining a bright light on radicals and their activities, the public can clarify for themselves the nature of such affiliations.

Its an interesting idea. The information at Canary Mission is certainly more professionally presented and meticulously sourced than other "Rogues Galleries"  that have come and gone on the web.

But no, Sylvia, its not us.

Incidentally, a little bird tells me that the Twitter account Betty Blogs is (one of many) sock puppet accounts belonging to the obsessed cyber-stalker from down under, Sylvia Postadas.

We're not taking it personally. Just a few days earlier, Betty Blogs lay the blame on Israel advocacy group, StandWithUs. Perhaps she's just throwing her filth against the wall to see what sticks

Anti-Israel activists seem to be growing increasingly unhinged and  paranoid now that the Jews are fighting back.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sylvia starts seeing Zionists in her tea leaves and in her vegemite sandwiches real soon.  I suspect she's already begun to count her shoes.

Gabriel Schivone: "As A Jew"

According to FringeGroups, in their post  "Rise of the Schivone Jews"

Mr. Gabriel Matthew Schivone is one of the very few people in human history whose very name appears destined to become a description of a phenomenon, in this case the Schivone Jew.  Previous examples of persons who have given their names to phenomena include Vidkun Quisling, the Earl of Sandwich, and only very few others.

He's even got his own entry on Urban Dictionary.

Gabriel Schivone  is the coordinator of Arizona's chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, and  was recently profiled by the controversial site Canary Mission, who wrote:

On the official 2011 Gaza flotilla website, Schivone is described as "a Chicano-Jewish American and undergraduate student who was born in Tucson, Arizona."

Schivone is not Jewish. He has however, since 2011, consistently purported to be, and many - including himself - have suggested as to why this is.

He first "revealed" his cultural heritage in an article that he wrote for Ha'aretz explaining why he - as a Jew - was taking part in the anti-Israel flotilla bound for Israel in 2011.

He was immediately admonished by a former classmate,Valerie Saturen. In a letter to the editor, Saturen explained, "Gabriel is not Jewish, whether in terms of ethnic ancestry, religious belief, or cultural identity. He has never identified as a Jew until it became useful in advancing his political agenda."
Gabriel Schivone was interviewed in a Jerusalem Post article, Why do non-Jews bashing Israel claim to be Jewish? and was specifically asked  if he had converted to Judaism or if his parents or grandparents were Jewish. He did not answer affirmatively to either.

Gabriel will be participating in a June 6 talk to be held at the Culver-Palms United Methodist Church in Culver City, California. Even though Gabriel Schivone's lies has been outed repeatedly and publicly, they persist, exhibiting a narcissism that borders on pathological.
Again, from the J Post
Prof. Alvin H. Rosenfeld, Director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary anti-Semitism at Indiana University, told the Post on Tuesday that “Israel’s defamers and delegitimizers include large numbers of misguided Jews, manipulative Jews, malevolent Jews, and other Jews of assorted bad faith. With Schivone, we now see phony Jews added to this notoriously disreputable bunch.”
