Help fight Antisemitism on Facebook

Facebook doesn't feel this violates its "Community Standards"
Antisemitism on Facebook
Facebook is ok with this, as well.
Antisemitism on Facebook
They appear to have no objection to this one, either
Antisemitism on facebook

Do you care about the hate speech on Facebook?  Please sign this petition  and call for change developed by Dr Andre Oboler of the Online Hate Prevention Institute and Michael Mendelson of the 14 October protest organising committee.

From the petition:

We believe Facebook is one of this century’s most important communications tools not only in the United States but globally. We believe Facebook Inc has a social responsibility to run the Facebook platform is fair and transparent manner. We commend Facebook for prohibiting Hate Speech in its terms of service, but feel this does not go far enough. We also believe that the current provisions against hate speech are not seriously or effectively enforced.

We call on Facebook to:
1. Revert back to the old rule under which ‘hateful speech’ was prohibited rather than ‘hate speech’. This captures a far wider variety of hate, and Facebook should not allow the use of its platform as a channel for hate against any individual or group.
2. Have a person properly review the first complaint about any content.  Algorithms for identifying hate are fine when they are identifying hate in the system themselves, but if a person takes the time to make a report, Facebook must take sufficient staff time to properly consider it.
3. Be transparent about the way complaints are reviewed. If a large volume of complaints are made about the same content in a relatively short period of time, then it is fair for a certain number of those to be logged without reviewing the content again, however:
a) Users must be told this is what happen to their report
b) A sufficient number of complaints should trigger a fresh assessment by a different reviewer or manager
c) Additional fresh assessments should occur periodically (based on elapsed time or volume of complaints) and at each point of escalation a more senior Facebook staff member should review the reports.
d) It should be possible for a sufficiently serious complaint (relative to other complaints) to rise all the way up to the CEO and board for final determination if it is not upheld earlier and keeps being reported by a significant number of users.
4. Improve quality control of the complaints process. Facebook should conduct random audits of complaints and publically report on the percent of complaints that on further review are reassessed. Facebook should also set an expected quality of service for complaint handling and take steps to address the problem when the quality drops below this threshold. We believe there is an extreme bias in favour of rejecting complaints.
5. Work with local NGOs that focus on hate speech in each of the countries in which Facebook has users. Most of Facebook’s audience (approximately 83%) is outside the United States and the language of hate speech differs country by country. In order to effectively implement its prohibition of hate speech, Facebook needs to directly work with, and learn from, local organisations around the world who counter hate speech. Facebook should also run a more open consultation on policy matters and invite these organisations to participate.
6. Recognise Holocaust denial as a form of hate speech. Facebook’s continued refusal to acknowledge Holocaust denial as a form of hate speech is a disgrace that must be fixed. This issue will not go away until Facebook fixes it.

Idan Raichel in San Francisco: BDS fail

Israeli singer songwriter Idan Raichel is back in San Francisco, performing tomorrow night at the Nourse Theatre. The 1600 seat venue is completely sold out.

For the lucky ticket holders, here's a taste of whats to come

Idan Raichel visited ABC7 News with the Consul General of Israel, Dr. Andy David to talk about his music and his vision.  He was interviewed by Cheryl Jennings

From ABC, Channel 7

The Idan Raichel Project is a multicultural and international collection of musicians working with an Israeli recording artist who believes music can bring people together in spite of their political or religious differences...

"We're singing in our own native languages, in Hebrew, Arabic, over 95 musicians and singers record in the Idan Raichel Project. The youngest member in the project is 16 and the young spirits are 83 and 91 years old," Raichel said.

Cheryl: "Why do you call it the Idan Raichel Project?"

Raichel: "Because it's not a band. In every song there is a different lead singer and different musicians."
Israel is surrounded by countries in conflict. Raichel says his project brings the voices of Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrian musicians to mainstream radio in Israel.

"When you talk about peace agreements and the struggle for peace, I think it should start from the art, that people will start just listening to music from both sides," Raichel said.

"Once you are hearing the performers that join Idan, you stop looking at the colors, you stop looking at how they look, you just understand they are just like you," Israel Consul General Dr. Andy David said. "I think Idan is maybe the best ambassador that Israel has through his music and his inclusiveness."

Billboard Wars, Vancouver: Prologue

We've seen over time how anti-Israel groups are determined to bring the wars of the Middle East into our public transit system and how nonprofit Israel Advocacy group StandWithUs is determined to counter them.

In Vancouver, Canada there may have been an interim step.  The notoriously inaccurate 4 part Maps of Disappearing Palestine went up and came down rather unexpectedly, over and over again.  According to a press release circulated by anti-Israel activists Marty Roth and Charlotte Kates of the Palestine Awareness Coalition,  the lying sacks of crap  posters went AWOL on three separate occasions.

Oops.
VANCOUVER, October 10, 2013 – The “Disappearing Palestine” wall mural displayed at a Canada Line SkyTrain station was stolen by vandals for the third time overnight on October 9, shortly after it was replaced following two earlier thefts. The ad, part of a campaign by the Palestine Awareness Coalition, has been running since August 27.

The Skytrain ad was vandalized previously on the weekends of September 21 and October 5, when it was also stolen from the station by unknown vandals who appear to have scraped the ad from the walls.

The ad has been re-posted again. The Coalition is not aware of any suspects being identified in the repeated thefts.

In the Bay Area, we've seen pro-Israel material regularly vandalized.

But rather than emulate the fetid tactics of our opposition,  pro-Israel activists should consider taking positive steps. Consider, for example contributing to the work of BlueStar or StandWithUs, both excellent organizations that work hard to share Israel's side of the story.

Billboard Wars, Vancouver edition: The season finale

From StandwithUs, an international non-profit organization, dedicated to informing the public about Israel and to combating  extremism and anti-Semitism.

StandWithUs [SWU] is placing posters in ten TransLink stations to counter the misinformation of anti-Israel posters currently at these sites and on buses in Vancouver.  The StandWithUs ads will run beginning the week of October 14 until November 14, 2013.

StandWithUs, the international Israel education organization, opened its first Canadian chapter in Toronto in 2012, with community leader Meryle Kates as executive director. Though StandWithUs has countered anti-Israel transit ads in the U.S. since 2007, this is the first time the organization has posted ads in Canada.

StandWithUs will display two different posters.

One depicts Jewish loss of land from Biblical times to the present by juxtaposing a map of the ancient Jewish kingdom circa 1000 BCE, a map of the land designated as the Jewish homeland by the League of Nations in 1920, and a map of the much smaller Israel of today.
Jewish Loss of land

The second ad, with pictures of Israeli and Canadian children waving their national flags, celebrates the shared values and freedom both countries enjoy.

They will run on the Canada Line - Waterfront, Vancouver City Station, and Yaletown and on the SkyTrain - Commercial Station.

The SWU ads will counter the map posters sponsored by the Palestine Awareness Coalition (PAC) which depict a “disappearing Palestine,” with Israel appearing to expand into the West Bank.

“The anti-Israel ads distort facts. We have already encountered these particular 'map' ads in the U.S.  They presume there once was an Arab country called 'Palestine' when in fact no such country ever existed prior to the one being considered today.  Conversely, there has been a continuous Jewish presence in the land of Israel for 3 millenia, and the League of Nations recognized the Jews' historical connection to the land which is why it carved out the Palestine Mandate as the Jewish homeland,” explained Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs.

In reality, it is the Jewish state that has steadily gotten smaller.  It reached its largest extent during the reigns of Kings David and Solomon when it stretched into Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.  In 1920, the League of Nations designated present-day Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, and the Golan Heights as the Jewish homeland.  But over the decades, Israel shrank to its present size and is only 9 miles wide at its narrowest point and 290 miles long.

“As usual, the anti-Israel ad campaign tries to undermine North American support for Israel by misrepresenting its history.  Now the campaigners have moved to Canada in an effort to erode Canada's strong support for the Jewish state.   Many community members have been frustrated with the anti-Israel rhetoric on campuses and in the community and requested that we respond.  The StandWithUs posters balance the propaganda with the facts.  They also remind Canadians of the shared values and many benefits of Canada's steadfast alliance with Israel.  "I am proud to be with StandWithUs, an organization working to correct misrepresentations about Israel with the facts,” commented Meryle Kates, StandWithUs Canada executive director.

The anti-Israel billboard campaigns began in the U.S. and for the past six years, StandWithUs has countered each one.  SWU ran ads several times in San Francisco and New York City; Houston, Texas; Missoula, and Helena, Montana; Washington, DC; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Chicago, Denver, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“StandWithUs will not allow anti-Israel campaigns to go unanswered, no matter where they appear.  Our goal is to set the record straight, and to inform the public about Israel's challenges and extraordinary achievements in helping make the world a better place,” concluded Rothstein.

BDS : All wet at UC Irvine

The anti- Israel cru have failed to defeat Israel militarily.
They have failed to demoralize Israel through an ongoing terror war.
BDS is the current tactic, and after 12 years, it too is failing.
Why?

In Nov, 2012 the UC Irvine student council voted to divest from companies doing business in  Israel. This is what followed from the school administrators
Such divestment is not the policy of the campus, nor is it the policy of the University of California. The UC Board of Regents’ policy requires this action only when the U.S. government deems it necessary. No such declaration has been made regarding Israel.
In the spirit and practice of active engagement with all peoples of that region, UCI has been extremely pleased with recent global collaboration between leaders and researchers here and those at top universities around the world, including Israel. The campus looks forward to continued constructive exchanges that benefit our students, faculty and community.
Why have BDS activists put so much effort into a resolution with no teeth?
One reason is the publicity-  while sabotage of Israel's economy would be a welcome outcome , publicity and  "rebranding" of Israel are also primary motivators.

BDS  at its core is a paper tiger.
How do you defeat a paper tiger?
Try water.
In spite of the BDS resolution, or perhaps because of it, UC Irvine has been strengthening its ties with Israeli institutions. Israel and California both share the challenge of managing a limited water supply.

From Parallel Worlds: Water Management in Israel and California , posted by Jay Famiglietti of University of California, Irvine in National Geographic's Water Currents

... It is a well-known fact that this entire region faces extreme challenges to manage their scarce water resources. Drought, increasing agricultural water demand, population pressures, and competing stakeholders add to an already stressed water system. Despite these challenges, this region is at the forefront of water management. The regional efforts to collaboratively manage surface water resources from the Jordan River and groundwater aquifers, for example by Friends of the Earth Middle East, as well as Israel’s strategies to maximize and efficiently use every last drop of water, are revolutionary.
In Israel, wastewater from urban areas is used to irrigate nearly 100% of crops in a desert while desalination accounts for 60% of water supply in densely populated regions. Pricing for water accurately reflects the costs to transport and produce the water, but these prices are affordable for all. Crops that can be grown with “poor quality” water, such as brackish or reclaimed wastewater, are cultivated while water-intensive agriculture and flood irrigation is rejected. Greenhouses and drip irrigation systems dominate the irrigation landscape. Clearly, the world, and including California, could learn a thing or two from Israel.
Over the course of our two weeks in the Middle East, we will meet with the key water authorities, water utility companies, civil society members, and university researchers in Israel, Palestinian territories, and Jordan. During our “science diplomacy” trip, we hope to not only share our research, but to learn from a region that is a prototype for effective water management...

For we Californians, it was surprising and inspiring to hear about the innovative strategies in place to meet agricultural water demands and, even more so, that the farmers were completely in support of these policies. In the States, we have very little monitoring of agricultural water use, particularly of groundwater abstraction. If groundwater were as closely allocated and monitored in the U. S. as the resources are in Israel, the monitoring may be regarded as a breach of personal freedoms, since groundwater rights are tied to property rights in much of the country. Yet here in Israel, the farmers have fully supported this progressive strategy to both strictly monitor and allocate water resources and to introduce new supplies through desalination and recycled water. Much of their support appears to be the result of an ongoing communication and social outreach initiative to inform farmers about the limits to water resources and the opportunities to meet water demands through more sustainable practices. How could we drive a shift in the United States to emulate this support for innovative water management policies?
His trip left UC Irvine's Jay Famiglietti energized  about further collaboration with Israel:

This Israel-California knowledge transfer model is an exciting venture, and we hope that over the duration of our trip we will find more ideas, collaboration opportunities, and links with civil society, academic, and governmental agencies. From domestic water use strategies to effective agricultural irrigation and high-tech water system modeling to the development of innovative distribution systems, the possibilities for international learning are endless. In the next few posts, you’ll hear about our conversations with key civil society leaders, such as Friends of the Earth Middle East, and regional water managers in Israel, Palestine, and Jordan as well as our insights to the region’s water initiatives, such as the proposed Red Sea-Dead Sea conduit. With this new cross-regional network as a foundation, our water future is looking brighter.

Sure looks like BDS is all wet at UC irvine.

Record-breaking $3.8 million raised in Los Angeles for Israel's Magen David Adom

The inaugural American Friends of Magen David Adom Western Regional Gala Dinner was held  Sunday October 6, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton and raised a phenomenal 3.8 million dollars for Israel's first responders.

Via JTA:

Celebs like Jackie Mason, Neil Sedaka, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and 12-year-old piano prodigy Ethan Bortnick showed up at the American Friends of Magen David Adom’s first-ever Los Angeles gala Sunday night. The event raised a record-breaking $3.8 million — the most ever raised at a single AFMDA event.

The funds will go toward building a new blood center in Israel. The current one, built in the 1980s, doesn’t accommodate the country’s growing population, and is in danger of being affected by rocket attacks and earthquakes. The updated version will include new and secure underground storage facilities.
From the American Friends of Magen David Adom's press release
MDA is Israel’s government-mandated – but not government funded – national emergency-response, ambulance, and blood services organization. Israel’s current blood center, built in the 1980s, no longer accommodates the nation’s growing population and is vulnerable to terror and rocket attacks, as well as earthquakes (Israel sits on two active fault lines).

The Gala raised funds for all of MDA’s lifesaving services, with the majority of the money going towards building a new blood center, equipped with new and secure underground blood storage facilities.

A great heart stops beating. Thousands of tiny hearts beat on. RIP Lauren Winkler

A great heart stops beating. Thousands of tiny hearts beat on.

Save A child's heart is an organization where everyday miracles transcend borders and politics.

From their mission statement

Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) is an Israeli-based international humanitarian project, whose mission is to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care for children from developing countries who suffer from heart disease and to create centers of competence in these countries. SACH is totally dedicated to the idea that every child deserves the best medical treatment available, regardless of the child's nationality, religion, color, gender or financial situation.

Since 1995, Save a Child's Heart  has treated more than 3,000 children suffering from cardiac disorders. Approximately 50% of the children are from the Palestinian Authority, Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Morocco;  30% are from Africa; and the remaining are from Asia, Eastern Europe and the Americas.

This week, one of the young leaders of Save a Child's heart, 28 year old Lauren Winkler, was tragically killed in a small plane crash.

From the Save a Child's heart Young Leadership group
At Save A Child’s Heart, Lauren oversaw the fundraising, arranged more than 3,000 visits to the Wolfson Medical Center and the SACH House in Holon, and coordinated the volunteers and interns in the program.
The Syrian children have to fly to Istanbul and then double back to Tel Aviv because Syria does not permit direct flights, even missions of mercy, to Israel.

Palestinian children can make it to the Wolfson hospital in Holon, Israel, where everyone from neonatal heart surgeons to the nursing staff donate their services, in 90 minutes.  Even during the worst of the Katyushka missile campaigns against the Israeli communities abutting Gaza, the ambulances kept bringing the children to Holon.

Currently, 20 Palestinian doctors are receiving free training in heart surgery through the program.  They don’t want their names in the paper because any current or future Palestinian government could view their training as collaboration with the Zionist enterprise, and they and their families would be killed.
Save A Child’s Heart also sends physicians on missions to poor countries, to train local doctors in heart care.
Lauren’s great heart has stopped beating, but thanks to her and people like her, and the surgeons and the nurses and the volunteers and the organizers, all unpaid, thousands of tiny hearts beat on.

The Rock Hyrax. Be Afraid. Be very Afraid

Rock hyrax, Eid gedi, Israel

The humble endangered and very cute rock hyrax  has joined  the zio-menagerie of terror.  Palestinian farmers have accused Israeli settlers of eco-terrorism, and have blamed them for the unleashing the hyrax- the Israeli rock rabbit- into their areas.

From the Gulf News:
A small mammal at risk of extinction might seem an unusual source of stress for humans, but an influx of rock hyrax on Palestinian farms near the Israeli segregation wall is creating an added burden for farmers in the area.

The uncharacteristically wide and dense spread of this omnivorous animal has caused farmers heavy losses as the animals eat all available vegetation.

Palestinian farmers have alleged that Israeli colonists have released a large numbers of rock hyrax behind the Israeli wall with the aim of harming Palestinian land.

The affected farmers claim it has taken them great efforts to learn the animal’s name and that they have been unable to handle the influx.

Hassan Zaid, a Palestinian farmer, said that the animal locally named “Al Wabar Al Sakhri” eats both green and dried grass and trees leaving the farmers with serious losses.

“The animal does not leave anything thing behind and our lands have been destroyed.”

From  Palestinian Wildlife Association  spokesperson Emad Al Atrash, in an interview  with Gulf news

“Killing the rock hyrax is banned and the farmers should not even think of this option at all,” he said.

“The way the rock hyrax should be handled must be different from the way the wild pigs are handled.”

“The rock hyrax is mainly a grass and plant eater with an incredible ability to climb. The lack of food and the dry weather has forced the animal to move to the coastal areas of the Palestinian territories,” he said.

He said “farmers should build cement walls around their houses to avoid attacks,” he said.

“The animal however should not be killed or trapped,” he stressed.

"Boycott Israel if you think thats just,
but unless you have a double standard you must
Also boycott the rest of the nations for allegations of human rights violations.
We're not perfect,  but if you think we're the worst
First take a look at the rest of the earth.
Don't pick and choose to pick on the Jews.
First pick up the paper and read the news"

Stop Antisemitism on Facebook

Guest Post from Emunah:

Antisemitism on Facebook is a serious problem.   While you are online,  take a moment  to report this egregiously hateful page. The truth About the Talmud

Antisemitism on  Facebook

Antisemitism on Facebook
Its not difficult to report a page on Facebook.

Click on "it shouldn't be on Facebook" , continue, click on "Hate speech" , "Targets a religious group" continue, then check "Report to Facebook".

Reporting hateful pages and hateful posts is just a band aid on a gaping wound. What else can we do to encourage Facebook to enforce its community standards already in place?

Algemeiner reports:

A group called “Remove Hate From FB” said the online site has gone far in blocking pages denigrating other minority groups, but attacks against Jews are allowed to linger online.

“Why is Facebook routinely and automatically removing hate group pages which target African Americans and the Gay Community, but when it comes to hate group pages that target Jews, they seem to turn an anti-Semitic blind eye?” asks organizer Michael Mendelson.

Remove Hate From FB has called for an”offline” protest at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on October 14, at 10:00am.

If you are in the Bay Area and are also  appalled by Facebook's inaction on removing  hate speech from its pages,  consider showing up to this event.   Facebook has responded favorably to pressure in the past.
Earlier this year, Matt Brownell reported

On Tuesday Facebook published a lengthy blog post acknowledging that it had failed to effectively remove hate speech on the site. It promised to work closely with activist groups to expedite complaints and increase accountability for users responsible for hate speech. The well-organized social media campaign, as well as increasing media attention, surely helped spur Facebook to action. But what really made a difference was that campaigners hit Facebook in the wallet by convincing businesses to pull their advertising from the site. The response from Facebook came shortly after two major advertisers, Nissan and Nationwide, suspended their Facebook campaigns.

It's a good lesson for any would-be activists: If you have a grievance against a company that relies on advertising, put pressure on the advertisers.
 That's our next step.

UPDATE

Facebook has spoken. They do not consider this hate speech, nor do they feel it violates their community standards.

"Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported for containing hate speech or symbols and found it doesn't violate our community standard on hate speech."

Veolia exits transportation industry. BDS movement claims victory.

Has Anna Baltzer  built a career on falsehoods?   Born as Anna  J. Piller,  some reports indicate she changed  her name to avoid having her anti-Israel activism embarrass her family.   Now going by Anna Nardie in some circles,  she still enjoys stretching the truth to its breaking point.  Her latest claim: Veolia's decision to give up its transportation related services worldwide to focus on energy, water and environmental was somehow a victory of the BDS movement.

But it wasn't.

From Marc Goldberg at the Times of Israel:    The Phantom BDS Victory

The Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has a curious history of claiming phantom victories. The latest article written by the BDS site in the US; ’Stop the Occupation’, joyfully claimed a victory in the war against Israel when Anna Baltzer, sporting the title National Organizer wrote;

“Big news! We just received confirmation that Veolia Transdev — a long-standing target of boycott and divestment Palestine solidarity campaigns worldwide along with its partial owner Veolia Environment – has sold off all bus services in Israel/Palestine! Until last week, Veolia Transdev, through its Israeli subsidiary Connex, operated bus lines for settlers on segregated roads in the Palestinian West Bank, and other lines throughout Israel. Today it operates none.”

Indeed this is absolutely true, but then Anna Baltzer walked off the cliff into fantasy land when she wrote;
“This marks one of the most significant, tangible victories to date for the international boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement. Veolia represents the global flagship BDS target, having lost more than $16 billion in contracts following campaigns across continents citing Veolia’s complicity in Israel’s gross violations of Palestinian human rights.”
As early as December, 2011, Veolia announced its intention to shift its focus.

From the Railway Gazette,  not particularly known as a  politically slanted, highly biased organ of the World Wide Zionist conspiracy,

Veolia Environnement has confirmed its intention to sell its share of Veolia Transdev as part of a programme to reduce its debts, which will see the sale of €5bn of assets over the next two years.

At an Investor Day held in Paris on December 6, Veolia Environnement Chairman & CEO Antoine Frérot announced that the company would concentrate on its water, environmental services and energy services divisions. The utility firm would now seek buyers for its 50% stake in Veolia Transdev.

In May 2010 Veolia Environnement concluded an agreement with state bank Caisse des Dépôts to merge Transdev and Veolia Transport. This included a long-term intention to float Veolia Transdev through an IPO, probably in 2012.

BDS fail has become a vibrant meme throughout social media.    BDS fraud should stand right along side  it.  Anna Baltzer again has shown us, yet again- the only appropriate response to BDS claims of "victory" is to meticulously check their facts. Heaven knows- they aren't going to do it.

UPDATE  from the Israel Action network

Transdev’s Group Communication Director, Bruno Negro, came forth to publicly confirm this fact stating, in an email to IAN, “In August of 2013, Transdev sold its entire bus operation in Israel to an Israeli bus company. The sale is final and has been approved by the Israeli Transportation Ministry. The sale was in the works for some time as part of Transdev’s global strategy to consolidate operations, decrease debt, and fund further growth in the U.S. and other selected countries. It was not due to any additional factors, political or otherwise.” It should also be noted that the company continues to proudly operate the Jerusalem Light Rail that serves all residents of the city.

Full transcript of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's Speech at the 2013 United Nations General Asembly.

Via Algemeiner :

Below is the full transcript of remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu at the 2013 United Nations General Assembly.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: Thank you, Mr. President.

I feel deeply honored and privileged to stand here before you today representing the citizens of the state of Israel. We are an ancient people. We date back nearly 4,000 years to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We have journeyed through time. We’ve overcome the greatest of adversities.

And we re-established our sovereign state in our ancestral homeland, the land of Israel.

Now, the Jewish people’s odyssey through time has taught us two things: Never give up hope, always remain vigilant. Hope charts the future. Vigilance protects it.

Today our hope for the future is challenged by a nuclear-armed Iran that seeks our destruction. But I want you to know, that wasn’t always the case. Some 2,500 years ago the great Persian king Cyrus ended the Babylonian exile of the Jewish people. He issued a famous edict in which he proclaimed the right of the Jews to return to the land of Israel and rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. That’s a Persian decree. And thus began an historic friendship between the Jews and the Persians that lasted until modern times.
But in 1979 a radical regime in Tehran tried to stamp out that friendship. As it was busy crushing the Iranian people’s hope for democracy, it always led wild chants of “death of the Jews.”

Now, since that time, presidents of Iran have come and gone. Some presidents were considered moderates, other hard-liners. But they’ve all served that same unforgiving creed, that same unforgiving regime, that creed that is espoused and enforced by the real power in Iran, the dictator known as the supreme leader, first Ayatollah Khomeini and now Ayatollah Khamenei.

President Rohani, like the presidents who came before him, is a loyal servant of the regime. He was one of only six candidates the regime permitted to run for office. See, nearly 700 other candidates were rejected.

So what made him acceptable? Well, Rohani headed Iran’s Supreme National Security Council from 1989 through 2003. During that time Iran’s henchmen gunned down opposition leaders in a Berlin restaurant. They murdered 85 people at the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. They killed 19 American soldiers by blowing up the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia.

Are we to believe that Rohani, the national security adviser of Iran at the time, knew nothing about these attacks?

Of course he did, just as 30 years ago Iran’s security chiefs knew about the bombings in Beirut that killed 241 American Marines and 58 French paratroopers.

Rohani was also Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator between 2003 and 2005. He masterminded the — the strategy which enabled Iran to advance its nuclear weapons program behind a smoke screen of diplomatic engagement and very soothing rhetoric.

Now I know: Rohani doesn’t sound like Ahmadinejad. But when it comes to Iran’s nuclear weapons program, the only difference between them is this: Ahmadinejad was a wolf in wolf’s clothing. Rohani is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, a wolf who thinks he can pull the eyes — the wool over the eyes of the international community.

Well, like everyone else, I wish we could believe Rohani’s words, but we must focus on Iran’s actions. And it’s the brazen contrast, this extraordinary contradiction, between Rohani’s words and Iran’s actions that is so startling. Rohani stood at this very podium last week and praised Iranian democracy — Iranian democracies. But the regime that he represents executes political dissidents by the hundreds and jails them by the thousands.

Rohani spoke of, quote, “the human tragedy in Syria.” Yet, Iran directly participates in Assad’s murder and massacre of tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children in Syria. And that regime is propping up a Syrian regime that just used chemical weapons against its own people.

Rohani condemned the, quote, “violent scourge of terrorism.” Yet, in the last three years alone, Iran has ordered, planned or perpetrated terrorist attacks in 25 cities in five continents.

Rohani denounces, quote, “attempts to change the regional balance through proxies.” Yet, Iran is actively destabilizing Lebanon, Yemen, Bahrain and many other Middle Eastern countries.

Rohani promises, quote, “constructive engagement with other countries.” Yet, two years ago, Iranian agents tried to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Washington, D.C. And just three weeks ago, an Iranian agent was arrested trying to collect information for possible attacks against the American embassy in Tel Aviv. Some constructive engagement.

I wish I could be moved by Rohani’s invitation to join his wave — a world against violence and extremism. Yet, the only waves Iran has generated in the last 30 years are waves of violence and terrorism that it has unleashed in the region and across the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I wish I could believe Rohani, but I don’t because facts are stubborn things, and the facts are that Iran’s savage record flatly contradicts Rohani’s soothing rhetoric.

Last Friday Rohani assured us that in pursuit of its nuclear program, Iran — this is a quote — Iran has never chosen deceit and secrecy, never chosen deceit and secrecy. Well, in 2002 Iran was caught red-handed secretly building an underground centrifuge facility in Natanz. And then in 2009 Iran was again caught red-handed secretly building a huge underground nuclear facility for uranium enrichment in a mountain near Qom.

Rohani tells us not to worry. He assures us that all of this is not intended for nuclear weapons. Any of you believe that? If you believe that, here’s a few questions you might want to ask. Why would a country that claims to only want peaceful nuclear energy, why would such a country build hidden underground enrichment facilities?

Why would a country with vast natural energy reserves invest billions in developing nuclear energy? Why would a country intent on merely civilian nuclear programs continue to defy multiple Security Council resolutions and incur the tremendous cost of crippling sanctions on its economy?

And why would a country with a peaceful nuclear program develop intercontinental ballistic missiles, whose sole purpose is to deliver nuclear warheads? You don’t build ICBMs to carry TNT thousands of miles away; you build them for one purpose, to carry nuclear warheads. And Iran is building now ICBMs that the United States says could reach this city in three or four years.

Why would they do all this? The answer is simple. Iran is not building a peaceful nuclear program; Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Last year alone, Iran enriched three tons of uranium to 3 1/2 percent, doubled it stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium and added thousands of new centrifuges, including advanced centrifuges. It also continued work on the heavy water reactor in Iraq; that’s in order to have another route to the bomb, a plutonium path. And since Rohani’s election — and I stress this — this vast and feverish effort has continued unabated.

Ladies and gentlemen, underground nuclear facilities, heavy water reactors, advanced centrifuges, ICMBs. See, it’s not that it’s hard to find evidence that Iran has a nuclear program, a nuclear weapons program; it’s hard to find evidence that Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapons program.

Last year when I spoke here at the UN I drew a red line. Now, Iran has been very careful not to cross that line but Iran is positioning itself to race across that line in the future at a time of its choosing. Iran wants to be in a position to rush forward to build nuclear bombs before the international community can detect it and much less prevent it.

Yet Iran faces one big problem, and that problem can be summed up in one word: sanctions. I have argued for many years, including on this podium, that the only way to peacefully prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons is to combine tough sanctions with a credible military threat. And that policy today is bearing fruit. Thanks to the efforts of many countries, many represented here, and under the leadership of the United States, tough sanctions have taken a big bite off the Iranian economy.

Oil revenues have fallen. The currency has plummeted. Banks are hard-pressed to transfer money. So as a result, the regime is under intense pressure from the Iranian people to get the sanctions relieved or removed.

That’s why Rohani got elected in the first place. That’s why he launched his charm offensive. He definitely wants to get the sanctions lifted; I guarantee you that. But he doesn’t want to give up Iranians’ nuclear – Iran’s nuclear weapons program in return.

Now here’s a strategy to achieve this. First, smile a lot. Smiling never hurts. Second, pay lip service to peace, democracy and tolerance. Third, offer meaningless concessions in exchange for lifting sanctions. And fourth, and the most important, ensure that Iran retains sufficient nuclear material and sufficient nuclear infrastructure to race to the bomb at a time it chooses to do so.

You know why Rohani thinks he can get away with this? I mean, this is a ruse. It’s a ploy. Why does Rohani think he – thinks he can get away with it? Because – because he’s gotten away with it before, because his strategy of talking a lot and doing little has worked for him in the past.

He even brags about this. Here’s what he said in his 2011 book about his time as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, and I quote: “While we were talking to the Europeans in Tehran, we were installing equipment in Isfahan.”

Now, for those of you who don’t know, the Isfahan facility is an indispensable part of Iran’s nuclear weapons program. That’s where uranium ore called yellowcake is converted into an enrichable form. Rohani boasted, and I quote, “By creating a calm environment – a calm environment – we were able to complete the work in Isfahan.” He fooled the world once. Now he thinks he can fool it again.

You see, Rohani thinks he can have his yellowcake and eat it too. And he has another reason to believe that he can get away with this. And that reason is called North Korea. Like Iran, North Korea also said its nuclear program was for peaceful purposes. Like Iran, North Korea also offered meaningless concessions and empty promises in return for sanctions relief.

In 2005 North Korea agreed to a deal that was celebrated the world over by many well-meaning people. Here’s what the New York Times editorial had to say about it, quote: “For years now, foreign policy insiders have pointed to North Korea as the ultimate nightmare, a closed, hostile and paranoid dictatorship with an aggressive nuclear weapons program. Very few could envision a successful outcome, and yet North Korea agreed in principle this week to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, return to the NPT, abide by the treaty’s safeguards and admit international inspectors.”

And finally, “diplomacy, it seems, does work after all. Ladies and gentlemen, a year later, North Korea exploded its first nuclear weapons device.”

Yet, as dangerous as a nuclear-armed North Korea is, it pales in comparison to the danger of a nuclear-armed Iran. A nuclear-armed Iran would have a choke hold on the world’s main energy supplies. It would trigger nuclear proliferation throughout the Middle East, turning the most unstable part of the planet into a nuclear tinderbox. And for the first time in history, it would make the specter of nuclear terrorism a clear and present danger. A nuclear-armed Iran in the Middle East wouldn’t be another North Korea. It would be another 50 North Koreas.

Now, I know that some in the international community think I’m exaggerating this threat. Sure, they know that Iran’s regime leads these chants, “death to America, death to Israel,” that it pledges to wipe Israel off the map. But they think that this wild rhetoric is just bluster for domestic consumption. Have these people learned nothing from history? The last century has taught us that when a radical regime with global ambitions gets awesome power, sooner or later its appetite for aggression knows no bounds.
That’s the central lesson of the 20th century. And we cannot forget it. The world may have forgotten this lesson. The Jewish people have not.

Iran’s fanaticism is not bluster. It’s real. The fanatic regime must never be allowed to arm itself with nuclear weapons. I know that the world is weary of war. We in Israel, we know all too well the cost of war. But history has taught us that to prevent war tomorrow, we must be firm today.
And this raises the question, can diplomacy stop this threat? Well, the only diplomatic solution that would work is one that fully dismantles Iran’s nuclear weapons program and prevents it from having one in the future.

President Obama rightly said that Iran’s conciliatory words must be matched by transparent, verifiable and meaningful action. And to be meaningful, a diplomatic solution would require Iran to do four things. First, cease all uranium enrichment. This is called for by several Security Council resolutions. Second, remove from Iran’s territory the stockpiles of enriched uranium. Third, dismantle the infrastructure for nuclear breakout capability, including the underground facility at Qom and the advanced centrifuges in Natanz.

And, four, stop all work at the heavy water reactor in Iraq aimed at the production of plutonium. These steps would put an end to Iran’s nuclear weapons program and eliminate its breakout capability.
There are those who would readily agreed to leave Iran with a residual capability to enrich uranium. I advise them to pay close attention to what Rohani said in his speech to Iran’s supreme cultural revolution — Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council. This was published in 2005. I quote. This is what he said:
“A county that could enrich uranium to about 3.5 percent will also have the capability to enrich it to about 90 percent. Having fuel cycle capability virtually means that a country that possesses this capability is able to produce nuclear weapons.” Precisely. This is why Iran’s nuclear weapons program must be fully and verifiably dismantled. And this is why the pressure on Iran must continue.

So here is what the international community must do: First, keep up the sanctions. If Iran advances its nuclear weapons program during negotiations, strengthen the sanctions.
Second, don’t agree to a partial deal. A partial deal would lift international sanctions that have taken years to put in place in exchange for cosmetic concessions that will take only weeks for Iran to reverse.
Third, lift the sanctions only when Iran fully dismantles its nuclear weapons program. My friends, the international community has Iran on the ropes. If you want to knock out Iran’s nuclear weapons program peacefully, don’t let up the pressure. Keep it up.

We all want to give diplomacy with Iran a chance to succeed, but when it comes to Iran, the greater the pressure, the greater the chance. Three decades ago, President Ronald Reagan famously advised, “trust but verify.” When it comes to Iran’s nuclear weapons program, here’s my advice: Distrust, dismantle and verify.

Ladies and gentlemen, Israel will never acquiesce to nuclear arms in the hands of a rogue regime that repeatedly promises to wipe us off the map. Against such a threat, Israel will have no choice but to defend itself.

I want there to be no confusion on this point. Israel will not allow Iran to get nuclear weapons. If Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone. Yet, in standing alone, Israel will know that we will be defending many, many others.

The dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran and the emergence of other threats in our region have led many of our Arab neighbors to recognize, finally recognize, that Israel is not their enemy. And this affords us the opportunity to overcome the historic animosities and build new relationships, new friendships, new hopes.

Israel welcomes engagement with the wider Arab world. We hope that our common interests and common challenges will help us forge a more peaceful future. And Israel’s — continues to seek an historic compromise with our Palestinian neighbors, one that ends our conflict once and for all. We want peace based on security and mutual recognition, in which a demilitarized Palestinian state recognizes the Jewish state of Israel. I remain committed to achieving an historic reconciliation and building a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Now, I have no illusions about how difficult this will be to achieve. Twenty years ago, the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians began. Six Israeli prime ministers, myself included, have not succeeded at achieving peace with the Palestinians. My predecessors were prepared to make painful concessions. So am I. But so far the Palestinian leaders haven’t been prepared to offer the painful concessions they must make in order to end the conflict.

For peace to be achieved, the Palestinians must finally recognize the Jewish state, and Israel’s security needs must be met.

I am prepared to make an historic compromise for genuine and enduring peace, but I will never compromise on the security of my people and of my country, the one and only Jewish state.

Ladies and gentlemen, one cold day in the late 19th century, my grandfather Nathan and his younger brother Judah were standing in a railway station in the heart of Europe. They were seen by a group of anti-Semitic hoodlums who ran towards them waving clubs, screaming “Death to the Jews.”

My grandfather shouted to his younger brother to flee and save himself, and he then stood alone against the raging mob to slow it down. They beat him senseless, they left him for dead, and before he passed out, covered in his own blood, he said to himself “What a disgrace, what a disgrace. The descendants of the Macabees lie in the mud powerless to defend themselves.”

He promised himself then that if he lived, he would take his family to the Jewish homeland and help build a future for the Jewish people. I stand here today as Israel’s prime minister because my grandfather kept that promise.

And so many other Israelis have a similar story, a parent or a grandparent who fled every conceivable oppression and came to Israel to start a new life in our ancient homeland. Together we’ve transformed a bludgeoned Jewish people, left for dead, into a vibrant, thriving nation, a defending itself with the courage of modern Maccabees, developing limitless possibilities for the future.

In our time the Biblical prophecies are being realized. As the prophet Amos said, they shall rebuild ruined cities and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and drink their wine. They shall till gardens and eat their fruit. And I will plant them upon their soil never to be uprooted again.”

BDS fail news of the Week.

More BSD fail news this week:

Sept. 28 was declared a "National day of Action against Sodastream".  Our friends in the UK were more than ready.

From  Sussex friends of Israel , a group dedicated  to developing greater support, awareness and understanding of Israel through education, communication and community partnership
Supporters of Israel came together today, to hold a Bagels Against Bigotry party outside Brighton’s environmentally friendly refill store Ecostream, to counter a planned day of action and demonstration by BDS, the anti Israel group Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

The bagel themed party started at 11.30am outside the Ecostream store on Western Road Brighton, with supporters offering home baked cakes and salmon filled bagels for passers-by to enjoy as they visited Ecostream.

According to the Police just 45 members of the anti-Israel ‘BDS’ group attended the event billed by them as a national day of action.

Within 20 minutes of their arrival the Police moved the protesters to the opposite side of the road, where their protests were not only drowned out by the passing traffic but also obscured by regular Brighton and Hove double decker buses.

This week the Ecostream store has reported its best ever week of sales since opening in Brighton last year. During the event today there was a constant flow of customers refilling their oils, vinegars and environmentally friendly detergents, stocking up with dry goods, as well as purchasing their brand new Sodastream machines.

Sussex Friends of Israel organiser Simon Cobbs said: “The turnout from supporters of Israel, from across the country today has been superb, we outnumbered the anti-Israeli groups by at least two to one, and at the same time we had a party. I want to thank everyone for their support today, it just shows what can be achieved when the community comes together to counter bigotry and eat bagels.
“Our cross-denominational supporters, have been baking cakes, filling bagels and, most importantly, at the same time supporting the trade of Ecostream, one of Brighton’s greenest and most environmentally friendly shops.
“We were really surprised that the national day of action only generated 45 protesters, and despite their shouting and screaming, they didn’t interrupt our ‘Bagels Against Bigotry’ party, while Ecostream reported brisk trade throughout the day, which capped a record breaking week of sales”.
Congratulations to Sussex friends of Israel for this successful example of the Buycott, as an ethical counter to the ugliness of the BDS  boycott.

And a huge, massive, epic  $130 million dollar BDS fail:

Israeli technology, research and innovation is coming to China. The Li Ka Shing Foundation from China has pledged  $130 million to Israel’s Technion. The funds will be used both at  Technion campus in Haifa and to establish the Technion Guangdong Institute of Technology, a joint venture with Shantou University in Guangdong Province in southern China. This is the largest ever donation to the Technion and one of the biggest in the history of Israeli higher education.

Facing Urban Shield: A Jump the Shark moment for Bay Area anti-Israel groups?

Lives depend on it. Preparation is key.  Writing in the venerable New England Journal of medicine, Doctors Arthur L. Kellermann.and Kobi Peleg described how years of advance training and preparation streamlined the response parameters, and potentially saved lives in the chaotic aftermath of the attack on the Boston marathon.

“The goal of a well-crafted disaster plan is to provide a framework for preconsidered action. Experience has shown that such a framework is necessary to ensure a well-coordinated response to a sudden mass-casualty event. Boston's health care providers reacted the way they did because they knew what they were supposed to do. Those who did not were smart enough to follow the lead of those who did. That's how a “ritualized” disaster plan works.”

Israel has had more than its share of mass casualty events, and the doctors agreed there is much to learn from their experience:

“In contrast to Israel, a country that has ample experience with terrorist bombings, too many U.S. hospitals treat disaster preparedness as an afterthought. We would be wise to emulate Israel's doctrine, which emphasizes the importance of national coordination, standard operating procedures, constant attention to surge capacity, the avoidance of emergency-department overcrowding, the distribution of casualties according to type and severity, and the frequent conducting of rigorous drills.4 Because Boston followed many of these principles, it mounted an effective response. Our goal must be to ensure that every U.S. city can do the same.”

A mass casualty event is just as likely to be “natural” as man-made.  Flooding. Fires. Earthquakes. Severe weather   Experts predict the overall probability of a 6.7 or larger earthquake striking the Bay Area in the next 30 years at 63 percent. Again,  preparation is key.

Urban Shield aims to save lives. Coordinating first responders in a variety of role-playing scenarios, it  is scheduled for Oakland October 25-28.   From their website:

Urban Shield has grown into a comprehensive, full-scale regional preparedness exercise assessing the overall Bay Area UASI Region's response capabilities related to multi-discipline planning, policies, procedures, organization, equipment and training. Urban Shield continues to test regional integrated systems for prevention, protection, response and recovery in our high-threat, high-density urban area. The exercise evaluates our existing level of preparedness and capabilities, identifying not only what we do well, but areas in need of improvement. The previous years' After Action Reports are referenced and used to assist in prioritizing upcoming expenditures possible for the region so we may become more prepared for any type of critical event or incident in our area.

The diverse list of participants includes Children’s Hospital,  Kaiser Hospital and Alta Bates. The Red Cross is involved, are local police, fire and EMT associations from ten different Bay area counties. The goal is preparedness training  in the service of saving lives in the Bay area.

Who could possibly object?

A consortium of groups operating under the name "Facing Urban Shield' have organized in response, calling Urban Shield -  "a trade show and training exercise for SWAT teams and police agencies" , claiming  it "will bring local, national and international law enforcement agencies together with “defense industry contractors” to provide training and introduce new weapons to police and security companies".  Facing Urban Shield dismisses the training programs as "war games"  The list of groups participating includes the  Tristan Anderson Campaign, Palestine Youth Movement, International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network,Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism, Arab Resource and Organizing Center, and the Islamic Labor Caucus.   See a pattern?
Why would anti-Israel groups join together to protest a first responders training conference and trade show?

With the Middle East a tinderbox of instability, the Palestine-Firsters are faced  with a stagnant movement to destroy the democratic state of Israel. They have prioritized building alliances as a way to grown their near moribund movement

From Lynn Gottleib,  published at the JVP Rabbinic Council blog: (emphasis mine)

"Recently, Noura Khouri and I initiated the Facing Urban Shield Action Network in the Bay Area which is composed of over 20 organizations that address different aspects of the militarization of police. Urban Shield is the weapons trade show and training ground for police agencies from the US and around the world. The IDF is connected to Urban Shield. Protesting Urban Shield is an opportunity to link domestic and international struggles against occupation, incarceration and war and build the global movement for justice and peace."

What does this group have planned?

From their Facebook page (As of today, all of 2 people have committed to attending)

Join us on October 25th at Oscar Grant Plaza in down town Oakland, at the Marriott Hotel. We will converge at the Marriott and keep a steady presence from 8-5, and rally from 5-6. We will raise our collective voices and say: enough police, and state violence - it doesn't work!

Expect a flash mob with a lame song and dance routine  Expect a few miscreants attempting to disrupt the exhibit hallExpect self-congratulatory youtubes and press releases on how successful they were. Expect more tales told by  idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

UNRWA: You can't run from the truth

On August 16, 2013, the U.S. and the Palestinian Authority signed a new $148 million economic aid agreement.

This aid is only a fraction of what the Palestinians receive from the world community.  Per capita, the Palestinian receive more aid than any other people in the world. Much of this money is channeled through UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East

The Palestinians receive more aid per capita than any other group worldwide. Chart from Elder of Ziyon

UNRWA was established in 1949 as temporary organization yet has survived for 64 years by extending its services to the descendants of the original beneficiaries.   According to UNRWA, a Palestinian refugee is  someone whose residency  was in Palestine from June 1, 1946 to May 15, 1948, and who lost both their homes and their livelihoods in the war against Israel.  They make  no pretext of Palestinians being "indigenous"   There is simply a requirement of residency in pre-state Israel for two years.  UNRWA is unique because  its sole  responsibility is to one group of refugees. Throughout the world, other refugees fall under the jurisdiction of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

UNRWA's  2012 budget was $907,907,371., with the US, EU, UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, The Netherlands and Japan paying 71 percent of the total.

Humanitarian aid, worldwide
What does our tax money go to?

Watch this shot clip of UNRWA sponsored Camp Jihad.  Do you still believe this conflict is about "the occupation"?

From the film:
“Our parents were on the beach,” a teacher in Balata tells the young campers sitting around her during story time. “They sailed ships, they would travel, they had cars, palaces, and villas… Every night they would tell stories.”
She then asks the children if Palestinians still have the sea, and if they want to go to the sea in Jaffa, Haifa, and Acre. Notwithstanding her passion for teaching about local geography, she asks the children if they would like to return to the sea in the land-locked city of Nazareth.
Her story soon takes a chilling turn. The Palestinians were having a nice barbecue on the beach when a wolf appeared, she recounts. “Who is the wolf?” the teacher asks. “The Jews! Isn’t it true that the Jews are the wolf?”“Who expelled us?” she asks the kids, who listen with rapt attention. “The Jews!” they yell energetically.
“I will defeat the Jews,” a camper named Tayma tells the documentary crew. “They are a gang of infidels and Christians. They don’t like Allah and do not worship Allah. And they hate us.”
One young campers sums up, “The summer camp teaches us that we have to liberate Palestine.”

On October 5 there will be a San Francisco  fundraiser hosted by American Friends of UNRWA for this already bloated organization, ostensibly to fund programs for children.  A 5-K run around Lake Merced is scheduled, in "solidarity with Gaza".  To those participating. You can't run from the truth. UNRWA is an obstacle to peace, perpetuating generations of refugees and indoctrinating children with messages of intolerance and hate.  Is this an organization that deserves your support?

Alice Walker . Keep This disturbed Woman away from Children

Another thoughtful human being shocked at Alice Walkers' embrace of looney toon David Icke.  From the Blog: At The back Of the Hill. Read the whole post here

Yesterday around tea-time I ended up reading about Alice Walker. Alice Walker, you will recall, is the American literateur and harpy about whose book 'The Cushion In The Road' the Anti-Defamation League said "What is shocking, however, is the extremely vitriolic and hateful rhetoric employed by Walker, the author of The Color Purple and a poet and activist. Her descriptions of Israel and Israelis can largely be described as anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic."
          And:

"Her writing is heavily peppered with explicit comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany, an analogy employed by the harshest of anti-Israel critics..."
[Source: http://www.adl.org/israel-international/anti-israel-activity/c/book-review-alice-walkers.html#.UcH41JxLE0G.]

I wouldn't be surprised if The Cushion In The Road is one of Jimmy Carter's favourites. Walker and Carter are birds of a feather.

A very filthy feather, to be sure.

"What is shocking, however, is the extremely vitriolic and hateful rhetoric employed by Walker"

According to Wikipedia, after having already visited Gaza in 2009, Alice Walker intended to participate in an aid flotilla countering Israel's blockade and contravening international law in 2011. "Explaining her reasons, she cited concern for the children and that she felt that "elders" should bring "whatever understanding and wisdom we might have gained in our fairly long lifetimes, witnessing and being a part of struggles against oppression."

[Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Walker.]

Also from Wikipedia, "In May 2013 Alice Walker indicated her support for the conspiracy theorist David Icke. On BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs she said that Icke's Human race get off your knees (in which Icke claims that Earth's moon is actually a “gigantic spacecraft” transmitting “fake reality broadcast[s]...in much the same way as portrayed in the Matrix movie trilogy") would be her choice if she could have only one book. Walker has also praised this book on her own website, stating that upon reading the book she "felt it was the first time I was able to observe, and mostly imagine and comprehend, the root of the incredible evil that has engulfed our planet."

David Icke?

Man, I just looooove Wikipedia!

David Vaughan Icke is the new-age nutzoid who claims that many of the world leaders past and present are actually reptilian pedophiles from outer space.

Once again from Wikipedia: "Icke argues that humanity was created by a network of secret societies run by an ancient race of inter- breeding bloodlines from the Middle and Near East, originally extraterrestrial. Icke calls them the "Babylonian Brotherhood." The Brotherhood is mostly male. Their children are raised from an early age to understand the mission; those who fail to understand it are pushed aside. The spread of the reptilian bloodline encompasses what Norman Simms calls the odd and ill-matched, extending to 43 American presidents, three British and two Canadian prime ministers, various Sumerian kings and Egyptian pharaohs, and a smattering of celebrities such as Bob Hope. Key Brotherhood bloodlines are the Rockefellers, the Rothschilds, various European royal and aristocratic families, the establishment families of the Eastern United States, and the British House of Windsor. Icke identified the Queen Mother in 2001 as "seriously reptilian."

Action Alert: Insist that CSUN Remove David Klein's Biogoted Anti-Israel Web pages

From StandWithUs ,  an international, nonprofit organization supporting Israel around the world.

Cal State University Northridge [CSUN] mathematics professor David Klein has posted anti-Israel defamations on the CSUN server.  These inflammatory web pages violate Cal State University standards and policy, and foster a hostile environment for pro-Israel students on campus.  Thus far, CSUN officials have refused to remove the offending web pages.

Background.  David Klein, professor of mathematics at Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) posted anti-Semitic, anti-Israel material web pages on the CSUN server. One page, “Boycott Israel,” is crude anti-Israel propaganda with the inflammatory header that “Israel is the most racist state in the world at this time,” links to anti-Israel websites and materials, and gruesome photos of dead children to imply that Israel intentionally murders Palestinian babies—that is, the medieval blood libel charge.

On a separate page, Klein posted an open letter to CSU’s Chancellor, urging CSU to reverse its decision to reinstate the study abroad program in Israel because Israel is an “apartheid,” dangerous state where American students would face discrimination and even possible death at the hands of the IDF.

These web pages should be removed immediately from the CSUN server.  They violate CSU’s policy of prohibiting misuse of the school name for political purposes.  They also are intended to incite hatred of Israel and Israel’s supporters. Professor Klein’s materials, with their double standards, distorted facts, and demonization of Israel are clear examples of what the US State Department identifies as the new Anti-Semitism.  Unfortunately, the letter urging revocation of CSUN’s study abroad program was signed by over 77 CSU faculty and staff, including the CSUN Deans of Humanities and of Arts and Humanities.

What can you do to help?
Sign an open letter to the university:

The Silence of Their Friends. The Hypocrisy of the Middle East Children's Alliance

International relief organizations are warning of the risk of mass starvation across Syria, with 4 million people at risk.   According to the Moadamiyeh Media Center, six people have died of starvation in recent days- two women and four children ages. 15 other children are in intensive care in clinics, suffering from malnutrition.

From Save the Children UK, from Hunger in a War Zone.

The devastation caused by the conflict has forced almost 7 million people into poverty.  Deprived of their income and assets, and with food prices rocketing, thousands of parents have been pitched from lives of relative comfort into destitution. While inflation is estimated to be around 50%,  food-price inflation is as high as 100%. impoverished by the conflict and faced with this rampant inflation, 40% of families across seven governorates report that they lack enough food; what used to be a comfortable state salary is now insufficient to buy enough basic food for families in areas like Deir-ez-Zor.

With food so scarce and so expensive, half of an average family’s expenditure is now on on basic food. This is already proving unsustainable for many families. According to one survey, one family in five is spending over a week a month without any food in the house because they cannot afford any.  More and more families are sinking into destitution and debt, selling off what little they still have and sliding nearer the point when they simply cannot feed their children.
"The world has stood and watched as the children of Syria have been shot, shelled and traumatized by the horror of war," said Roger Hearn, Save the Children's regional director for the Middle East. "The conflict has already left thousands of children dead, and is now threatening their means of staying alive."

The witness statements gathered by Save the Children paint a bleak picture of the devastation wrought by the 2 1/2 year long civil war.
  • It was very dangerous for me and my children — we had no food and were always hungry. When this hunger had continued for two months and we were very weak, that is when we decided to flee. We realized we would starve if we stayed in Syria. – Roula, mother
  • The price of food doubled in my village and we couldn't afford to eat at all. Milk, bread, everything — doubled. The children became very hungry all the time. And with no nutrients, they also became sick. – Jinan, mother of Siba, 3
  • Because of a lack of food, my children didn't grow as they should. They started losing weight, and it was all we could do to keep them alive. – Maryam, mother of two

Faced with this colossal  humanitarian crisis, you would expect the  Bay Area  "Human rights" organizations to have mobilized.

It hasn't happened.

The Middle East Children's Alliance pays scant attention to the plight of Syrian children on their website, instead promoting  its usual unvaried menu of anti-Israel programming

September 25, 2013 7:00pm Berkeley, CA: "Welcome to Hebron" Film Screening

October 05, 2013  6:30pm - 9:30pm A Cultural Benefit for Children in Palestine Traumatized by War

October 17, 2013  7:00pm - 10:00pm Children's Rights in Palestine & The U.S. as a Dishonest Broker

MECA pays mere lip service to the suffering of the children in Syria. There are no links to the Save the Children Report.  There is no programming to alert the world to the suffering of the children of Syria. There are no protests, no marches, no 10-K runs to raise funds. For MECA,  what defines worthy victims are their perceived oppressors.

There is something fundamentally dishonest about an organization  called the "Middle East Children's Alliance" that can look the other way in the face of such suffering. There is something fundamentally vile about an organization  that picks and chooses its morality based on the racist equation "Can we blame Israel for this?"
