A large brass menorah was stolen from Washington Square Park in San
Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood ( Filbert and Stockton streets) this
weekend. The menorah, erected by Chabad is 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide and weighed
over 100 pounds. It was installed two weeks ago in the northeast corner of the
park as part of a neighborhood celebration of Hanukkah.
The menorah was taken before
it could be lit for the second night of Hanukkah Sunday.
We are a stubborn,
resourceful people. You can’t take the light from us.
The community responded by
bringing their family menorahs to the celebration, filling the park with light.
North Beach Chabad has filed a police report. It is
hoped that surveillance footage from neighboring businesses and residencies
will lead to an arrest. In typical San Francisco fashion, this is not being
treated as a hate crime.
